Charles Willard Harmon, age 83, the son of Willard and Louise Harmon, was born April 5, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska. He passed away October 24, 2018 in Omaha, Nebraska.Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Louise Harmon; loving wife of 59 years, Martha, who was living in Council Bluffs; son, Richard C. Harmon of Omaha, NE. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn J. Cahill (James) of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Melissa Montgomery (Chris) of Salt Lake City, UT, William Harmon (Amanda) of Rochester, MN, Catlin Cahill of Fredericksburg, VA; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Marcus Ebert of Bushnell, IL, Christopher and Trinity Montgomery of Phillips, WI and Harrison and Ulysses Harmon of Rochester, MN; sister, Kathleen L. Gray (Lee) of Atlantic, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Charles was a 1954 graduate of Benson High School and attended Grace Bible Institute, where he met Martha. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1983, where he earned his Associate and Bachelor Degrees. He served his country in the United States Army National Guard and United States Army Reserve. He was employed by Union Pacific Corporation, first with the Railroad, then with Union Pacific Reality formerly Upland Industries Corporation as Records Agent for 32 years. Under a reorganization and downsizing of the Corporation, he was transferred to Union Pacific Resources, which was sold to Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. Upon early retirement from Union Pacific, he worked for the State of Nebraska, Department of Human Services for 11 years until retirement in 1999.Following his retirement, he got interested in genealogy and became an active member of the Nebraska Society of Mayflower Descendants of which he is Past Governor and Deputy Governor General, representing the local Society at national meetings. He has a dual membership in the Iowa Society of the Mayflower Descendants and served as Captain. His ancestor was John Howland of the Mayflower. The Harmons were among the founders of Suffield, Connecticut; and the Fairfields were among the founders of the town of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He has gained membership in Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Society of War of 1812, and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.Charles has had a long-time involvement in music. He has kept up on playing the violin, which he started at age nine. He is a member of the Evening Musicale in Council Bluffs, IA where he performs occasionally. He also sang in church choirs and for a time in the Omaha Symphonic Chorus. Charles also enjoyed serving as a Boy Scout Leader, participating in shooting sports and flying private airplanes.Funeral Services will be 9:30 A.M., Saturday, October 27, 2018 at First Covenant Church of Omaha (201 North 90th Street).
