<p><br></p><p>Boonville- Stephen J. Tompkins, 78, of Erwin St., husband of Elaine and a well-known Baseball Umpire, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023, at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, after a long illness.</p><p><br></p><p>Affectionately known as Jack, he was born in Boonville, on September 1, 1944, a son of Stephen J. and Claribel Jackson Tompkins. A lifelong resident of Boonville, he attended Boonville Central School, graduating with The Class of 1963. While in high school, Jack was a three sport athlete, participating on the Soccer, Basketball and Baseball teams; of these three sports, Jack was especially talented in Baseball. Thereafter he furthered his education at SUNY Cobleskill. Later Jack was employed at Gould Paper Company, Lyons Falls, before 40 years of employment at Revere Copper &amp; Brass Co. of Rome.</p><p><br></p><p>On April 22, 1967, Jack was united in marriage with Elaine A. Hughes, at the First Presbyterian Church, Boonville.</p><p><br></p><p>Jack was a well-known and respected Baseball Umpire for many years, appearing at high school, Babe Ruth, American Legion and Little League ball games throughout central and northern New York. He was a long-time member of Mohawk Valley Baseball Umpires Association.</p><p><br></p><p>Mr. Tompkins, was an active member of the Boonville Community where he was a 50-year member of First Presbyterian Church, Boonville, serving as a Trustee and was elected to be a member of the Session. He was also a longtime active member of Boonville-Uriel Masonic Lodge and an active member and past Treasurer of Boonville Elks Lodge # 2158 and for many years he and Elaine managed the Hof Brau Beer Garden at the Boonville Oneida County Fair. Jack was a longtime and current member of the New York State Woodsmen’s Field Days Board of Directors, where for many years he served as chairman of the Outdoor Camping Committee. During his youth he was a member of Boy Scout Troop # 13 and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed attending a Boy Scout Jamboree in Denver CO. He was also an avid Yankee Baseball and Buffalo Bills Football Fan and enjoyed attending Bills games in Buffalo with his cronies from Boonville.</p><p><br></p><p>Jack’s dearest memories came from time spent with his loving wife, Elaine of 55 years and their family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Allison Tompkins, Beth (Vincent) Thomas and two grandchildren, Izaiah and Laila Thomas</p><p><br></p><p>A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, March 18, 2023, beginning at 12 Noon at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where members of Boonville-Uriel Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic Service and Members of Boonville Elks Lodge # 2158, will conduct services at 12:15 P.M. to be followed by services officiated by Pastor Daniel Richter. Calling hours are also Saturday, March 18, from 10:00 A.M. until noon at the funeral home. Interment will be in Boonville Cemetery, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394 or to a charity of your choice.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>
