Mamie M. Perry Obituary

Mrs. Mamie M. Perry gained her heavenly wings on Wednesday March 8, 2023, at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center surrounded by her husband Wesley D. Perry, her children Craig, Serena, Denise and grandchildren. She was eighty years old.

Mamie was born on September 4, 1942, to the late Hunter and Agnes Lee and raised in Little Plymouth, VA (King and Queen County). In 1961, Mamie graduated from Central High School in King and Queen County. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland to be with her sister Julia Mae and cousin. She worked at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, where her nursing career began. In the mid 60’s, Mamie decided to move to Plainfield, New Jersey to be with her older sister Bertha working for Markay Hat factory in Plainfield NJ. During this time Mamie met Wesley Perry and on March 29, 1969 they joined hands in Holy Matrimony. Mamie was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a fashion diva and enjoyed shopping at Lord and Taylor, Bambergers, and especially the Short Hills Mall. Following in her mother and aunt's footsteps she wore the most beautiful hats that you can imagine for church and special events. She was quite proud of her collection of hats.

She had a lengthy career in nursing spending many years working at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, in NJ on 7th tower orthopedics. After retiring from the hospital, she did private practice working for the former Governor of NJ Thomas Kean, taking care of his mother and then his aunt.

She enjoyed going to Broadway shows, visiting local theaters Crossroads, and Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn and was proud to say that she attended every August Wilson Play. Along with Broadway shows, she loved her music and every year she would go to the Hampton Jazz Festival in Hampton VA and Jazz in the park in South Jersey.

In the early 1980’s Mamie Joined the Order of Eastern Star. She held the titles of Past Worthy Matron of Jeptha Chapter and Vasti Chapter, she was also a Past Most Ancient Matron. Being a faithful woman, Mamie joined Mount Zion AME Church in Plainfield, NJ where she served as a faithful member of the Sarach March Missionary Society.

She was a devoted grandmother giving each grandchild the attention they needed. She was very particular in the way her grandchild dressed and spared no expense when they were young. She had no problem speaking her mind when it came to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

When it came to cooking everyone wanted Aunt Mamie sweet potato pies, and her collard greens. Mamie was a true matriarch of the family. When you needed her, she was there for anyone in need.

Mamie was predeceased by her parents, Hunter and Agnes Lee, her daughter Monica S. Johnson, sisters Julia Mae Holmes and Audrey Louise Lee and brother Alexander Lee.

Mamie is survived by her husband of over sixty years, Wesley D. Perry and their children, Craig Perry of East Orange NJ, Serena Bennerman (Jason) of Somerset NJ, Son in law James Johnson of GA, Denise Perry of New Brunswick NJ.
