Hilda Andresen Obituary

It is with much love that we mourn the passing of Hilda Marie Andresen, of Okotoks, Alberta on February 2, 2023 at the age of 77 years.

Hilda was predeceased by her Mother (Louise), Father (Peter) and brother (Ernie). She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Cathy (Jim), Greg (Karen) and Jennifer (Gordon); grandchildren: Austin, Brooke, Chase, Katrina, Peter, Theo, and Mathias; sisters Anita (Malcolm), Margaret (Stanley), Wanda (Mark) and brother David (Roseanne); as well as numerous relatives and friends.

She was the third child in her family and lived in Alberta all her life starting in Bentley, then moving to Ponoka, Vulcan, Trochu, Red Deer, Edmonton, and Okotoks. She was very inquisitive and had an amazing appetite for reading and learning. Hilda was an honor student in high school, an athlete on the volleyball and basketball teams and served on the yearbook committee/student council. As an adult, Hilda attended Red Deer College then received her Bachelor of Education degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta as well as her master’s degree in Library and Information Science with Honours. She was active in her communities as a member of the Lions Club, the Eastern Star and as the Director of the Wolf Creek Board of Education.

Hilda had many interesting occupations starting early as an IGA clerk. She worked at Barrhead Drycleaners and then at McKee & Ing Insurance in Red Deer. Hilda was a very supportive wife and mother working at the family-owned Home Furnishings Gallery stores in Trochu and Ponoka with skills in decorating and making draperies.

After completing her post-secondary education, she became the Head Librarian in Ponoka, after that she moved onto an Employment and Immigration Supervisor in Red Deer. Expanding her career in public service she moved to Edmonton to take on the role of an Occupational Health and Safety Inspector and then Manager of the Western Region for the Human Rights Commission for the Government of Canada. She was such a dedicated, hard-working individual that even after retirement continued facilitating presentations for the Human Rights Commission up until the fall of 2022 and was instrumental in developing several programs including early work with Truth and Reconciliation.

We will forever remember Hilda for her integrity, generosity, witty intellect, her fashion sense and mostly, the love she had for her family. “In so many different ways, she caught the light and shined as only she could.”

A Celebration of Life/Memorial Lunch will be held on Saturday, June 24th, 2023 at 12:00p.m. at Hudson’s Green Nature and Activity Centre, 6210 61 Street, Ponoka, Alberta.

Memorial Donations may be made in Hilda’s name to the University of Alberta.
