Gene Gordon Wise

Gene G. Wise, age 89; passed February 16, 2023.

Gene was born in Gibbon, MN and moved to Bloomington, MN when he was in 4th grade. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1951. He attended Gustavus Adolphus and graduated with a major in History, a minor in English, and a teaching certificate. He obtained his Master’s Degree from Mankato State. In 1961 Gene married Marion Kamleiter and they shared their life together for 61 years. They had 4 children: Matthew (Stephanie), Ruth (Ross Underdahl) Ellen (Tim Spika) Beverly (Tom DeWitte.). He had 8 loving grandchildren: Sarah, Dana, Erin, Rachel, Dan, Shannon, Jake, Matt, and great-grandson Stavros. Gene served in the army from 1953-1955 and did a tour in Korea. He was a career social studies teacher beginning in Lyle and Austin, MN, but teaching for most of his career at Lincoln and Kennedy High Schools in Bloomington. In his later years, he volunteered his time helping elementary students with math and reading, as well as working in the school library and garden. Gene was also a dedicated volunteer at VEAP and Meals on Wheels for many years.

Gene’s passion was coaching football. He impacted many student athletes over a 56 year coaching career. He coached at Lyle High School, Austin High School, Bloomington Lincoln, Hamline University, Normandale Community College, St. Thomas University, Academy of the Holy Angels, Eden Prairie High School, and the semi-pro MN Maulers; he finished his coaching career with his grandson’s 6 th grade Eastview football team. He was a mentor to many coaches.

Gene was proud of his German heritage, appreciated a fine noon beer, attending Polka festivals, (even Czech ones) listening to “Old Time” music, working in his yard and watching girls high school basketball. His family would say he was most proud of his children, grandchildren, and his great-grandson. He loved reading aloud to his grandchildren, attending their activities as they grew and spending time with them. As a proud grandpa, Gene loved to share stories and photos of his children and grandchildren with others. He looked forward to spending time with his family, enjoying an unexpected visit, and celebrating momentous occasions with them. Gene will be missed by many. The family is grateful for the care of Amy, his long-time cardiac specialist. He thought the world of her. Also, we are all grateful for the support of the 3rd floor nursing team at Southdale during his Covid fight; they will forever have a special place in our heart.

Mass of Christian Burial Friday February 24, 2023 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity of Mary, 9900 Lyndale Ave So. Mr. Wise was one of my teachers in high school at Kennedy. I struggled in school but he was always willing to help if he could. He will be missed and I am so thankful that he was one of my mentors in school who helped me through difficult times. He was a blessing.
