Linda Hammond Obituary

Linda Gillman Hammond passed away on February 11, 2023. Born on February 25, 1942, in Price, Utah, she was the oldest of Willis E. and Juanita Chapman Larsen’s five children.

Linda grew up in Lindon and was a stellar student, receiving multiple honors such as the opportunity to attend Girls State. She was loved by all her classmates and respected by her educators. She loved high school sports and was excited to be on the front lines as a Viking cheerleader with many of her friends. She then attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. After graduating, she was recruited by the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company, where she worked as a customer service representative in the Provo and American Fork facilities. When her two children were in school, she returned to work for Alpine School District. She began as a teacher’s aide in the Special Education Department at Lindon Elementary School. The school’s principal was so impressed by her talents that he recruited her to be his administrative secretary. She then transferred to the Personnel Department in the district office, working as the secretary over Classified employees.

She married her high school sweetheart, Paul Gillman, on October 13, 1961. From this union, they were blessed with two children: Hal (Suzanne) Gillman and Paula (Eric) LeDuc. They enjoyed the outdoors and together made many memories during camping and hunting trips. Paul passed away on July 31, 1984. Hal and Suzie also preceded Linda in death, Suzie passing away on August 8, 2012, and Hal passing away on February 16, 2016.

Linda married Jay Hammond on May 13, 1988, and they welcomed three children to their growing family: Robyn (Mike) Derbidge, John, and Joe (Kristen Ballard) Hammond.  Jay and Linda shared many adventures traveling the world and they especially enjoyed BYU sports. They were members of the Cougar Club and had basketball and football season tickets and also traveled to many away games. They retired in St. George, Utah, but always made the trip back to Provo to attend the football games. They continued their love for sports by attending as many athletic games as possible at Dixie State College. Jay passed away on October 5, 2019. John also preceded her in death, passing away on January 15, 2010.

Linda held many Church callings and was always willing to lend a hand. She had the opportunity to serve as president of three different organizations: Primary, Young Women’s, and Relief Society.

Linda is survived by their children, Paula (Eric) LeDuc, Robyn (Mike) Derbidge, and Joe (Kristen Ballard) Hammond, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Kent (Sandra) Larsen, Dean (Pat) Larsen, and Trudy (Brian) Clark, as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. Her brother Richard Larsen, sister-in-law Sandra Larsen, brother-in-law Brian Clark, and granddaughter Jayde Fowler also preceded her in death.
