Verna Lillian DeVries Obituary

Verna Lillian DeVries. loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to the many lives she touched wherever she went. She peacefully departed this world on Saturday, February 4th, 2023.

Mom was born in Roberts, Montana on September 13, 1929 to Nester and Jennie Long, and on September 26, 1947 she married Bob DeVries to which they had 51 years together. They had 3 children Roly, Verdine and Marilyn.

Mom lived on the family farm after Dad’s passing in 1999 until 2004 when she then moved to Roberts. She resided there until October in 2022 and was then transferred to the Nursing home at Laurel Health and Rehab. Mom enjoyed all of her family and friends and so appreciated all the visits, phone calls, cards both at her home and at the nursing home where she met more new friends. Mom loved everyone and was called “GG” by many.

Mom was the oldest resident in Roberts and the last “Mother” of many church members to whom she touched their lives by teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, being very active member in the United Methodist Women’s group, Chair of the Harvest Dinner for many years, member of the Roberts United Methodist Church and serving on the Church board for over 50 years. Her church family was so very important to her. Being a member of the Kaleva, she was always willing to give a helping hand to whatever cause or to whom needed help and singing in the Finn choir.

Mom loved to bake bread, (finn), cookies, etc. and have her brother, friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren over for teatime. Whoever happened to stop by, they were always welcomed with open arms.

Mom is survived by her 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, Roly (Chris) Devries of Roberts and their children, and grandchildren, David and Doug Isler, Karla (Mike Bissonnette) Rebekka Eichelberger, Randy (Charlotte) DeVries, Verdine (Rick White) of Joliet and their children, and grandchildren, Jenny (Joe Johnson), Brenda (Nick Longin) Marilyn (Bill Kennedy) of Joliet, their daughter Destiny (Kevin Chirls) and grandchildren. Mom has one surviving brother, Clifford Long of Roberts, sister-in-law, Florence Sauther of Spokane, WA, brother-in-law Dick DeVries of Shepherd, MT, her very special friend Gladys Weimer and so many other special friends, close niece Betty Simons, nephew Frank DeVries, and many other special nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. Mom was also very close to Kirk, Chelsey and Trevor Payovich and her nephew, David Long, and his friend Theresa from Kentucky.

The family would like to thank the staff at Laurel Health and Rehab for the tender loving care they gave to our Mom.

Funeral services will be held at the Roberts United Methodist Church in Roberts, Montana on Monday, February 13th at 11:00 A.M.

Memorials may be made to the Roberts United Methodist Church, Box 242, Roberts, MT 59070.
