Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sherrill A. McIntosh (nee Ruthman), who passed away peacefully on February 1, 2023 at the age of 80, surrounded by family and friends.

Sherrill was born in Valleyfield, Quebec, the daughter of Earl and Elizabeth Ruthman, and sister of Gayle Arnold and Keith Ruthman. Sherrill spent her childhood and early adult years in Montreal, then married and moved to the USA, having spent most of her adult life in or near Essex Junction, Vermont.

First and foremost, Sherrill was a devoted mother to her four children, and a joyful grandmother (Nina) and great grandmother (GiGi) to four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She always knew how to have fun and the kids all loved the time they got to spend with her. A sleepover at Nina’s was the ultimate treat.

Anyone who knew Sherrill, will also tell you what a good friend she was, keeping in touch with so many friends from childhood and early adulthood over many decades. She enjoyed visiting with her friends for casual get-togethers locally, and especially enjoyed the many trips she took with her good friends over the years. She loved spending time at the beaches near Ogunquit, Maine, traveling to the Pacific Northwest to visit her brother and a childhood friend, and traveling to Toronto, Kingston, and Montreal to see her sister and extended family, and friends.

Sherrill was a lovely lady with a great big heart. Even in her career choices, she chose jobs where she could give of herself. She spent quite a few years working at the Essex High School, and in her later working years, as a caregiver, driving around northwest Vermont sharing a helping hand and a happy heart with numerous elderly shut-ins. Both before and after retirement, Sherrill also volunteered at the Respite House in Williston and for her local Meals on Wheels program.

Sherrill is survived by her four children, Ken McIntosh and his wife Laurie of Franklin, Douglas McIntosh and his wife Cynthia of Taos, New Mexico, Neil McIntosh and his wife Paige of Essex, and her daughter, Linda Blades and her husband Andrew of Jeffersonville, and by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, Keith Ruthman of Nanaimo, BC. In addition to her parents, Sherrill is predeceased by her sister Gayle Arnold and nephew, Gregory Ruthman.

Calling hours will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 pm on February 11, 2023 at Stephen C. Gregory & Son Cremation Service at 472 Meadowland Drive in South Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sherrill’s memory to purchase outdoor seating for residents and staff at Memory Care at Allen Brook. Donations should be sent to Memory Care at Allen Brook, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
