Laverne Delores (Coleman) Spearman, 76, of West Orange, NJ passed away January 28, 2023. She was born in Newark, NJ, to the late Ethel Epps and Daniel Coleman on February 11, 1946 and raised by the late Doris Richardson.

Laverne attended Camden Street Elementary School, West Kinney Jr. High School and Westside High School.

Laverne met the Love of her life, Alvin Spearman Sr. at the young age of 12. They were married at 16 and from this union blessed with two sons: Alvin Spearman Jr. and Jeffery Maurice Spearman, creating the nucleus of her family.

Laverne started working at the early age of 14, she worked retail positions with Woolworth's Department Store, and Canadians Women’s Wear going on to employment with New Jersey Bell. However, she obtained her dream job in 1970 with Eastern Airlines Inc. In 1983 Laverne moved to Miami, Florida for a position with Systems One Travel Agency, returning to New Jersey in 1997.

Working in the travel industry provided the perfect environment for Laverne to travel and stimulate her adventurous spirit in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America. Laverne's love for travel and adventure were among many virtues she instilled in her sons with wishes to stimulate their growth and understanding as men. Laverne always encouraged good manners, chivalry and ensured her sons attended schools that offered the best of education, failure was not an option. Leadership and excellence were modeled, promoted, and expected. Laverne loved and lived her life in maximum intensity.

Laverne entered Daughters of Israel Nursing Home, West Orange, NJ in September of 2014 where she remained until December 31, 2022. She passed away peacefully at Saint Barnabas Hospital.

Laverne was preceded in death by her brother Charles H. Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory, children, Alvin Jr (Kimberly) Spearman and Jeffrey (Tracy) Spearman, sister Aminah Adib-Muhammad (Calvin Peoples); and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
