Nancy Ann Owens Ballance, 84 was born in Kansas City, Kansas November 30, 1938, to Essie Mae Williams Owens and Eudibee Owens. She is preceded in death by her son Charles A. Washington, III; late husband, Police Captain Charles A. Washington, II; four sisters; Barbara Cooper, Louise Dale, Jean Brice, Ertis Hawkins and her parents. 


Nancy attended the Kansas City Kansas public schools and graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1956. She later received her BA and MA degrees from St Mary’s College and UMKC. She received her CPA from the state of Kansas. She was employed by The Kansas Corporation Commission and retired from the Board of Public Utilities.


Nancy was very active in her church, Freeman Avenue Church of God which later became Kansas City Community Church. She loved music, especially playing the piano. She studied music at the Conservatory of Music to enhance her skills to serve as a pianist for the church. In addition to playing the piano, she was an usher and served on the financial advisory board. Nancy loved God and people, she was kind, humorous and warm-spirited. She loved to go dining after service with her church family.


Nancy’s hobby was shopping. She absolutely loved and took much pleasure in shopping. She also loved to play bridge so when she married Errol she taught him how to play and he taught her how to win. They attended Bridge tournaments in several states for several years and sometimes took first place. Nancy also loved to travel to Branson, MO which was one of her favorite retreats.


She leaves to cherish her memory; her husband, Errol Ballance; daughter, Georgetta Grigsby; son, Bertrand Grigsby III; granddaughter, Caitlin Juana Vaca-Washington; grandsons, Shane Thompson-Grigsby and Steven Griffin; great-grandson, Phoenix Griffin; her brother, Harold P.(Janice) Owens; her sister, Harriett D. Johnson; her stepchildren, Errol (Lillian) Ballance Jr., Harold (Darchel) Ballance and Lorre Ballance. She also leaves a host of other stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church members to cherish her memories.
