Obituary

Janice (Jan) Leigh Duley—beloved wife of Dennis Paul Duley and mother of Kallie Lorraine and Bradley Hunt Duley—passed away at her home in Easton, MD on January 19, 2023, at the age of 59. Jan was born on February 28, 1963, in Guam, where her father was stationed with the U.S. Navy.

In May of 1985, she received a Fine Arts degree from Marymount University. Jan and Dennis married on Leap Day, February 29, 1994, while residing in Upper Marlboro, MD, eventually relocating to Easton, MD where she both thrived and built community. There, the Duley’s established the Kinder Garden Childcare Centers in Easton and Stevensville, MD—a name chosen in honor of Jan’s mother, a lifelong kindergarden educator. These businesses allowed them to combine Jan’s love of children and artistic talents to create a place for children to learn and grow.

Jan was also known throughout the Easton community for her volunteer service in support of St. Michaels Middle-High School. She was instrumental in designing magical prom parties and providing props for the school’s theater department. Jan will be sorely missed in each of these endeavors—having worked tirelessly in the service of others—with many having benefited from her love, creativity, and generosity.

Jan was preceded in death by her mother and father Walter Nevins and Carolyn Hanby Cottrell, and is survived by her husband, Dennis, children; Kallie and Bradley, three siblings; Sheryl Cottrell Hoehner (Paul), Arleigh Hunt Cottrell (Stevi), and Debi Sutton (Bob); nine nieces and nephews; and three dogs that brought her so much joy.

A celebration of life service will be held at The Royal Oak Community Methodist Church (6968 Bellevue Road, Royal Oak, MD 21662) on Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. Contributions in her memory can be made in her name to the St. Michaels Middle-High School theater program (attn.
