George Stott

George Stott, age 96, of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Greenwood Court (Stratford). Born in Windsor, son of the late George and Eliza (Greenwood) Stott. George is predeceased by his first wife Lily (Wainwright) Stott and survived by his second wife Mabel (Hachborn) (Hallman) Stott. By the time George had reached the age of 16 he had developed into a virtuoso cornet player. During his first job with the Ford Motor company, he got his right hand caught in a press severing two fingers. Shortly after losing the fingers, he returned home to teach himself to play his cornet with his left hand quickly attaining the level of excellence he had had with the right hand. He entered the navy as a bandsman, the only job he could qualify for with his injury. Upon moving to Stratford, he became the bandmaster of the Stratford Salvation Army band and became known as the cornet playing conductor of that group. He became well known in army circles and guest appeared with several other bands in the Stratford area. George and Lily owned and operated Wainwright Greenhouses until Lily’s Death in 1981. George was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy serving in Cornwallis and on the Uganda Crusier. He was a very faithful member of Elgin Missionary Church (Stratford). The family would like to thank George and Marg Falsetto for their enduring friendship and Wendy Dunn and all the nurses and staff at Greenwood Court for their excellent care. George was the proud father of Tom (Pat) Stott, Bryan Doer, Christine Stott, Laura (Ken) Carrick, Cindy (Dennis) Schmidt and his stepchildren Jim (Margaret) Hallman, Rick (Bonnie) Hallman, Sherryl (Moe)Polly and Donna Dubblestyne (Brian Leyser). George is survived by his 17 grandchildren and his 15 great grandchildren. George will be remembered by his sisters-in-law Dorothy Harmer, Florence Karcher and his brother-in-law Lawrence (Hilda) Wainwright. Besides his parents and his first wife, George was predeceased by a son Kevin, his grandson Delsyn, his son-in-law George Wilson, his sisters Doris (Cliff) Pickles, Mary (Charles) Lewis and his brothers-in-law Ken Rix, Doug Harmer and his brother and sister-in-law Pete (Jessie)Petersen.
