Marlys Irene Kommes, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital following a lengthy illness. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Marlys Irene Kommes was born on September 12, 1943, in Blencoe, Iowa, the daughter of Newell and Clarice (Erickson) Keele. She played basketball for Blencoe where she graduated from high school. Following graduation, Marlys attended MBT Business College in Sioux City, Iowa.

On September 11, 1965, Marlys and Richard Kommes were united in marriage at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. They made their home in Le Mars, Iowa. Marlys’ life revolved around her family. She rarely missed an event for her children, and later, for her grandchildren.

Marlys was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. She was an avid reader and completed numerous crossword puzzles. Marlys was an excellent cook and baker and also enjoyed drawing, letter writing and crocheting. She liked to play games with her grandchildren and “old fashioned” solitaire with a deck of cards. She looked forward to Wednesday shopping trips with her daughter, Suzanne. In recent years, Marlys and Richard sang Bluegrass music at family events and local festivals.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 57 years, Richard Kommes of Le Mars, IA; a son, Marty Kommes of Excelsior Springs, MO. son, Bryan Kommes of Florida, daughter, Suzanne Adair and her husband, Matt of Le Mars, IA and son, Greg Kommes of Davie, FL; grandchildren, Stephanie Kommes of Verona, WI, Samantha Kommes of Russell, IA, Dustin Kommes, Faith Kommes and Emily Kommes all of Davie, FL; great-grandchild, Caleb Kommes of Davie, FL; a brother, Eric Keele and his wife, Mary Ann of Bel Air, MD; and numerous relatives in the Kommes family.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
