Peter S. Nikitas Obituary

Peter Spylios Nikitas, 72, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on January 21st, 2023 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

He was a 1968 graduate of Pittsfield High School. After attending Hofstra University and Berkshire Community College, he earned a bachelor degree in Urban Planning and Development from the University of New Hampshire in 1973.

After a yearlong adventure in Europe, Peter returned to the Berkshires to work in the field of land surveying and deed research, where he became a regular fixture at the Registry of Deeds. Despite “retiring” several years ago, he continued to work at Foresight Land Services up until a few weeks before his death.

Peter’s greatest joys in life were his daughter Tatiana and his grandchildren Rylee and Owen. He was proud to see Rylee graduate from his Alma Mater this year. He spent every weekend with Owen, whether it was taking him out to lunch (McDonald’s) or buying him toys (trucks and Legos) or clothes (he loved to shop!). He was present for every game, practice or event, with his camera at the ready. Peter’s other loves included skiing and playing tennis. One of his last acts before his illness took over was to teach Owen how to ski. He reveled in the few short days of the year when he could both ski and play tennis on the same day!

Peter may be best known for his contribution to the local tennis community. Twenty-five years ago he formed a group he lovingly called the “Tennistas.” This was an informal weekend tennis group of over 30 people who were welcoming to anyone who wanted to join, regardless of skill level. In the words of his friend and fellow Tennista John Bell, “Peter was our steady, kind, humorous, generous, good hearted organizer. He fostered a great community of folks who enjoy playing for the love of the game.”

Peter is survived by his daughter Tatiana Nikitas Saunders and her husband West Saunders, his grandchildren Rylee and Owen Saunders, his brother Steven Nikitas, his cousin Stephanie Lemnios and her husband Zach Lemnios, his Aunt Sophia Scutakes as well as innumerable lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. S. Peter and Calleen Nikitas and his brother Dean Nikitas.
