The Westside and George Washington High School ran DEEP in Joe Joe's blood. His goal was always to return to GWHS to teach and coach at his alma mater. In 1965, his dream was realized. Joe Joe was once again back on the westside. He and his wife Kathleen chose to raise their family of two daughters Susan (Tony) Corrice, Shari Shires (David) Blane and one son Bric' (Marcia) Shires right down the street from the school. The Shires family continues to grow and includes 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren - A few who are definitely "Lil Joe Joe's"!

Some of the roles he held were teaching Government, Economics, Current Affairs, Drivers Education, Social Studies Department Head, Dean of Students, Athletic Director, Football Coach, Wrestling Coach and Track Coach. He once helped deliver a baby in the main office until an ambulance could arrive! Touching the lives of thousands of Students Joe Joe always tried to make a positive impact.
After retirement Joe Joe continued to work, proving that he truly believed in the "You've got to produce" philosophy he taught in class. Spending what should have been his retirement years working with Bartley Modular Construction gave him a renewed sense of purpose. Joe Joe was blessed to be able to travel the world for over 20 years with his best friend Ed Bartley. They were living the dream of building exciting projects, attending major sporting events, making friends and deep sea fishing while exploring places he'd never before dreamed of visiting.
