Our loving mother, Florence Lila (Vinge) Dolan, age 93, died peacefully the morning of March 9, 2016.Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Schnider Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2016 at New Hope Lutheran Church, 3125 5th Ave S. Schnider Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She was born September 12, 1922 in Torquay, Saskatchewan to Arne and Helma Vinge, both of Norwegian heritage. Florence attended nursing school and obtained her registered nursing degree. She worked in Williston, North Dakota and lived in the nursing residence next to the hospital. She made the decision to obtain more education and enrolled in Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She was home working as an RN in North Dakota when a young man name Oscar Dolan visiting his mother sat on a bed she had just made. Getting a bed made just right was no small task so she chewed him out, but apparently it wasnt too severe as romance ensued. They married the following May 26, 1951 after she finished her semester of school. After a temporary stint in Helena, while Oscar completed some training, they settled in Glasgow, Montana where Florence worked as a registered nurse. They moved to Great Falls in 1958, where she resided the rest of life. She was active in her church in numerous activities. She was the first woman elected to the church council which at the time was no small feat and raised a few eyebrows. She was known for writing and performing hilarious skits with her friends at Faith Lutheran. She didnt return to nursing after the move to Great Falls, which later in life she regretted some. She was proud of nursing heritage, though didnt understand why modern nurses didnt dress with white caps. She loved to bake and there was nothing better than coming home from school and smelling fresh baked caramel cinnamon rolls coming out of the oven. She and Oscar canned innumerable jars of fruit together as Oscar had a habit showing up bearing a sly smile and several lugs of fruit. They had spectacular flower and vegetable gardens and loved to entertain on the patio. Oscar, despite the Irish last name was of Norwegian heritage and holidays were filled with specialty Norwegian foods, though thankfully Lutefisk made only a rare appearance as she didnt like it.Florence always loved to doodle when she was young. In her 60s she decided to pursue art and started taking lessons. She participated in a weekly painting group at the YWCA and became an accomplished artist joining the Western Heritage Artist group. She produced art well into her 80s.Florence was preceded in death by her parents; devoted husband, Oscar; brother Glenn Vinge; and her sisters Ruth Nestingen, and Gertrude Swantz. She is survived by her brother, Lorne Vinge of British Columbia; four children and their spouses, Tom (Shelly) Dolan of Billings, Paul (Cindy) Dolan of Great Falls, Doug (Stacy) Dolan of Whitefish, and Kathy (Kent) Meyer of Kalispell; grandchildren, Jacob (Kristina) Dolan of Bozeman, Matt (Becky) Dolan of Missoula, Jenny Dolan of Glendale, UT, Jessica (Sean) Mach of Bothell, WA, Peter Dolan of New Orleans, Kyle Dolan of Kalispell, and Katy Dolan of Whitefish; two great grandchildren, Anna (Jacob and Kristina) and Wyatt (Jessica and Sean); numerous, wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins including her local cousins, Nancy (Dick) Doughton and Daryle (Sharon) Odden. The family wishes to thank Dr. Addison and Mary Gray for all their care, as well as the staff at Benefis Grandview for the wonderful care the past two years.
