Marjorie Jordan Newby Obituary

On Tuesday morning, January 3, 2023, Marjorie Jordan Newby peacefully slipped away to be with the Lord.

She was born on November 3, 1934 to the late Green T. and Etta Corine Jordan in Branchville, VA. She was the youngest of 9 siblings.

Marjorie accepted the Lord at an early age and joined Rising Star Baptist Church with her siblings. She was educated in the Southampton County Public School System. Marjorie was the class secretary of her 1951 graduation class of Southampton County Training school (currently Southampton High School) After high school, she moved to Portsmouth, VA to live with her sister and attended Norfolk State College (now Norfolk State University) to major in business administration.

In 1956, her sister Etta introduced her to Johnny Belton and his two sons – Jahi and Tyrone Belton. Seven years later they married. From this union, they had a daughter, and the boys had a baby sister named Lisa. As time progressed, Johnny passed. Nine years later, Marjorie remarried. She married Elder Henry L. Newby and relocated to Hampton, VA as the First lady of the United Church of God, Teach St.

As the First Lady, she would extend her services to the church as needed. In addition, she would render services as the pianist for the youth choir. Marjorie loved playing the piano. She read notes only a little but mainly played by ear like all her siblings.

Marjorie obtained employment with Berkley Citizens Mutual Savings & Loans Association, Norfolk, VA while in college. This was her career job for 29 years as Vice President and Administration Manager until the Savings & Loans began to fade away. Her next place of employment would be as a civil service worker where she was a valued member of the Administrative clerical team at the Atlantic Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command for 23 years until she retired.

Marjorie was a person who lived her life based on Faith, Family, Friends, and Fun! She always put the Lord 1st and taught her children to believe in God and not man. She loved "Family" and would do what she could to help them because it was instilled in her that "family helps family." When it came to friends, she would say…"Everybody isn’t your friend, remember that, but if you find a good friend, stick with them and always remember to treat them how you want to be treated; then your friendship should last a lifetime." Fun was a big characteristic which she inherited from her family. Her type of fun was watching TV, especially her cowboy shows, dancing with her family back in the day and most of all laughing to the point she would say… "I’m sorry, but my tickle box fell over." That was God’s angel; That was your Momma, your sister, your aunt, your cousin. That was your friend: Mrs. Newby, Marge, Margie, Marjorie!

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; and all her siblings except one. She leaves to cherish her memories: Daughter – Lisa M. Belton - Portsmouth, VA; Son – Jahi Belton (Elizabeth) - Hampton, VA; Son – Tyrone W. Belton – Jersey City, New Jersey; Sister – Etta C. Porter – Yeadon, PA; Granddaughter – Monique Belton-Speller (Andre) – Jahi’s daughter. Special Care Givers – Willie Sutton, Velmeta Riddick and Patricia E. Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, additional family, and friends.
