John Hnatiuk Obituary

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the falling asleep with the Lord of our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friends at Samaritan Place.

John was born February 3, 1928 on the family homestead. When John was 6 years old, his father became ill and departed from this earth leaving him to be raised by his mother and siblings. Growing up he attended Belmont School and helped out on the farm for a few years. Times were tough on the farm so he ventured to Regina employed by a family owned company hauling gravel, but decided this was not for him and returned home.

In the early 50’s John and his two brothers, Eli and George purchased land clearing equipment working in numerous areas in Saskatchewan for 15 years travelling as far as Quill Lake to Carrot River with slow moving equipment.

They returned back to the St. Benedict area clearing land for others including Alice’s father, where he met Alice. Equipment was sold and he returned home to farm when him and Alice married shortly after. To supplement income, he worked for the RM of Hoodoo as grader operator and clearing roads for the RM in the winter. His grain farming operation expanded to a cattle and hog operation. He was actively involved with the Lepine Church as a Trustee, organizing the planting of spruce trees that now adorn the church yard. He also served on the St. Benedict School Board and as an elder at the Wakaw Church. After many years of farming, they retired to Wakaw for a few years and finally to Saskatoon.

He is survived by his dearly devoted wife Alice of 67 years, his five daughters, Pat, and her son Jordie (Vicky), Cathy (Bob) and their children Tanya (Darren) great grandchildren (Aidan and Braelyn) and Heather(Steven) great grandchildren (Sophie and Hallie), Carolyn (Bill), Darcy (Perry) and their children Bryce, Janelle (Danen), and Alexa (Jayden), Corrine (Allan) and their children Evan, Haley and Rayna, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Sophia, siblings Savena, Pete, Nick, Eli, George, Tina and Stephie and son-in law Vern.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Samaritan Place staff for the compassion and care of Dad.
