Vivian L. Holliday

<p>Dr. Vivian Loyrea Holliday, age 87, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Saturday, December 24, 2022 at Wooster Community Hospital following a brief illness.</p><p><br></p><p>She was born on February 25, 1935 in Manning, S.C. to Reverend Louis Ario Holliday and Ellen Loyrea {Brewer) Holliday.</p><p><br></p><p>She is survived by her niece, Sarah "Ellen" Perdue of Columbia, S.C.; a nephew, Jeffrey Lee Overby {Lisa) Holliday of Jacksonville, N.C., great nephews, Jeffrey Lee Overby Holliday II of West Columbia, S.C., Joshua</p><p>Louis {Claudia) Holliday of Ridgeland, S.C., Ethan Coy Holliday of Jacksonville, N.C., Holden Bryce (Krystal) Holliday of Grovetown, GA and Matthew Jacob Holliday of Columbia, S.C.; great nieces, Pamela Gayle</p><p>"Paige" Holliday of Beaufort, S.C., Danielle Perdue (Matthew) Soch of Alexandria, VA., Sharon Rene "Sunny" Raulerson and Dena LeeAnn Raulerson both of Beaufort, S.C.; 2 great- great nieces and 4 great-great</p><p>nephews.</p><p><br></p><p>In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Lila Melle Olin; her brother, Louis Ario Holliday Jr. ; a sister-in-law, Gayle Overby Holliday and a brother-in-law, George Chapin Olin.</p><p><br></p><p>She attended Winthrop University and received her Bachelor of Arts in Latin in 1957. She went on to further her education and received her Master's degree in Classics in 1959 from the University of Missouri.</p><p><br></p><p>While attending the University of Missouri, she started her teaching career. She went on to receive her PHd in Classics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. She began her career at The College of Wooster in 1961 which would span 38 years. </p><p><br></p><p>She started her career teaching classes in Latin and Greek and after eight years appointed the Aylesworth Professor of Classical Studies. </p><p><br></p><p>She advocated for the founding of the Department of Archaeology at the college and also chaired the Department of Classical Studies from 1967 - 1976 and 1987 - 1990.</p><p><br></p><p>She founded and directed the "Wooster in Greece" program in 1973 and 1976 taking students abroad to study.</p><p><br></p><p>She was named the first female Dean of Faculty in 1977 and served until 1985.</p><p><br></p><p>She served as co-director of freshman Colloquium, and as coordinator of the Integrated Freshman Quarter.</p><p><br></p><p>She served in multiple other capacities during her tenure and had a great love for the college and all the students.</p><p><br></p><p>After her retirement from the College of Wooster, The Vivian L. Holliday Prize was established in her honor. The prize is awarded annually to the senior whose work in Independent Study in history, classical studies or archeology has been judged most outstanding. </p><p><br></p><p>Vivian's professional activities and responsibilities extended from Wooster to all over the world.</p><p><br></p><p>She was a recipient of a Fulbright Award for study in Italy in 1965, A National Endowment of the Humanities summer stipend in 1970 and 1992.</p><p><br></p><p>She served as a member of the Managing and Personnel Committees of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and as evaluator of fellowship proposals for the American Council of Learned Societies.</p><p><br></p><p>In 1981 she was a research professor at Dartmouth College and a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In 1985 she was a visiting administrator in the Soviet Union.</p><p><br></p><p>Her publications and presentations were numerous and included "Pompey in Cicero's Correspondence and Lucan's "Civil War".</p><p><br></p><p>She wrote two chapters and edited "Classical and Modern Narratives of Leadership".</p><p><br></p><p>She performed various lectures in her career to include "From Palaimon to Priscue", Luce Leadership Program", The Feminine Melody in Kazantzakis", "Leadership Programs Should Include Analysis", and "Job Satisfaction for the Faculty". </p><p><br></p><p>A Memorial Celebration of her life will take place on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2:00pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in Wooster with Enicko Ferenczy officiating.</p><p><br></p><p>A inurnment will take place on March 25th at 2:00 pm at Oak Grove Cemetery, in Manning, S.C. </p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The College of Wooster, or Hospice of Wooster. </p><p><br></p><p>Custer-Glenn Funeral Home in Wooster is honored to be serving the family.</p><p><br></p><p>Private or public condolences may be shared with the family at: www.custerglenn.com </p><p><br></p>
