Mary Anne Bannick Issaquah, Washington Obituary

Mary Anne Bannick

Mary Anne Bannick passed-away on December 11th, just 3 and ½ months short of her 99th birthday. She was surrounded by her children in her final moments as she was in her life.

Mary Anne was kind, generous, quick-witted, adventurous and put her family and her Roman Catholic faith above all else. She also did a remarkable job adapting to changes in technology and to her physical condition with grace and gratitude. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mary Anne was born in Seattle to Charles and Alice Zweigart. She grew up in the University District of Seattle, close to Blessed Sacrament Parish where she attended church and primary school. She attended Holy Angels (Ballard) and Immaculate Conception (Cherry Hill) high schools. She later attended Seattle University. With her husband, she raised her children in the Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue and later made St. Monica’s in Mercer Island her parish home.

Mom did not just observe her faith, she lived it! Indeed, the Golden Rule—centered on love—inspired and infused mom’s life. Her kindness and compassion extended beyond her children to her neighbors, her community and everyone she met. We were expected to treat others with loving kindness. Mom led by example.

In 1947 she married William R. Bannick. In 1951 they moved to their Bellevue home where they raised their 13 children. Mary Anne relished being a mom. She tried to make each of her children feel seen, appreciated and cherished. She expressed her love in a myriad of ways, from tucking us in at night, to encouraging our passions, to attending countless ballgames and teacher’s conferences.

Mom’s youngest child, Barb, was only 6 when the first of 27 grandkids arrived. And by the time the last grandchild was born several great grandchildren had joined the family! Mom reveled in being a grandma, just as she had in being a mom. She gleefully welcomed the grandkids over for a visit and was adept at picking out the perfect birthday gift for each one; a gift that reflected that child’s individual personality and interests. Mom also embraced her children’s spouses and partners, warmly integrating them into family activities—and into her heart.

Mom was adventurous, embracing life with zest, spontaneity and exuberance. There were the regular picnics to favorite spots--including Snoqualmie falls--and holiday excursions to Hood Canal, Long Beach and—mom’s favorite--Cannon Beach. There were also spur-of-moment day trips when mom would load the kids into the station-wagon and set off to some new place.

Mom was a woman of action, constantly on the move, so the loss of physical mobility and strength in her final years was particularly challenging. In some ways, however, mom’s diminished physical mobility helped her slow down and cherish each special moment. She was ever more grateful for life and its simple pleasures; watching the birds that frequented the birdfeeder outside her window, learning to facetime with family and friends and relishing times with her visitors, including the youngest great-grandchildren.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband William Bannick, and her sister Virginia Donley and her parents Charles and Mary Alice Zweigart.

Mary Anne is survived by her children Bill Bannick (Kim), Chuck Bannick, Claude George Bannick, Virginia Schweigler (Paul), Greg Bannick, Mary Greenfield (Keven), Joe Bannick (Theresa), Katy Love (Bryan), Mike Bannick (Kathy), Ann Wahl (Dave), Paul Bannick, Matthew Bannick, Barb Van Heyningen (Robert) and 26 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren as well as by her brother Charles C. Zweigart and her sister Helen Frank.

A funeral mass will be held on January 6th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church at 4301 88th Ave SE, Mercer Island. Mass will be preceded by a Rosary at 10:15 a.m.

Donations in Mary Anne’s name can be made to St. Monica Catholic Parish for The Deacon Warfield Scholarship Fund.
