Deacon Charles E. Cunniff, Jr. Obituary

Charlie Cunniff entered eternal life on Friday, December 16, 2022 with members of his family present at the time of his death. Born in Waltham, MA, Charlie served in the U.S. Coast Guard at the end of World War II and was a graduate of Boston College.


Charlie retired from Pratt & Whitney (Livermore, CA; CANEL, Middletown; East Hartford) in 1992. On December 19, 1980, Charlie was ordained a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church. His diaconal service, based at St. Rose of Lima Church in Meriden, continued until 2016.


Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife, whom he was married to for almost 54 years. He is survived by his children, Fr. Chuck Cunniff, CSP (Paulist Fathers), Pat Tencza (Jim), Jack Cunniff (Maureen), Paul Cunniff (Julie), Mary Rogalski (Dave), Meg Price (James), and Kate Jonkman (Hank); 13 grandchildren and their spouses; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Doran; and many nieces and nephews.


The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, December 29th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center Street, Meriden. Burial with military honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.


Many thanks to the staff of The Village at Kensington Place, Charlie’s home for the last 6 years. Their loving care, especially those in the Harbor unit these last 4 years, is very much appreciated.
