Alphonse J., age 91, on December 1, 2022 of Newtown Square, PA, formerly of Philadelphia, Springfield, and Marple, PA. The son of immigrants, he was the first college graduate in his family (St. Joseph College Class of 1953). A general surgeon (Hahnemann Medical School Class of 1960, surgical training at Misericordia Hospital 1960-65), he was on the staff of Mercy Fitzgerald and Riddle Memorial Hospitals from 1965 until his retirement in 1996. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Co-Director of the Department of Surgery (1979-1990), and introduced the vascular studies program to Fitzgerald Mercy, serving as Director from 1980-1996. He was Director and Chairman of the Intensive Care Unit at Fitz (1979-1990). He served as Director of Trauma Services at Misericordia and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. DiGiovanni was also a member of the Sons of Italy, Men of Malvern, and Knights of Columbus. He delighted in mentoring pre-medical students at his alma mater, St. Joseph’s, starting a program to benefit students aspiring to the medical profession. He realized a childhood dream by becoming a pilot, and enjoyed golf, tennis, and skiing. An avid Phillies and Eagles fan, he was a season ticket holder to both for decades. He entered every room with a big smile and a booming greeting.

He was predeceased by his son Ralph DiGiovanni, his brothers Carmen, Charles, and Frank DiGiovanni, and his parents Brigida and Alfonso.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Rose R. (nee Cauterucci), his children Mark (Lisa), Carolyn (Edward) Manning, Paul (Angela),  and Daria DiGiovanni, his 10 grandchildren Emilia Rose, Domenic Alphonse, Christopher, Mark, Gregory, Gianluca, Alexa, Julianna, Gabriele, and Sophia and his sisters-in-law Gail and Nella.

Gifts of securities often confer significant tax benefits on a donor. For example, contributions of appreciated securities held over a year are generally deductible at market value without realizing taxable capital gains, regardless of what the donor paid for them.
