Evelyn Rayle Showfety

Evelyn Rayle Showfety, age 97, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 22nd at Trinity Ridge Nursing Home in Hickory. Born April 9, 1925 in Greensboro,NC, she was the daughter of the late Robert E Rayle Sr. and Miriam AlfordWilmouthRayle

Evelynwas awarded a Scholarship upon graduation from High School to attend UNC-G (Women’s College at that time),upon graduation from that program she was an Executive Secretary for the Vicks Chemical Company in New York City and later, Ellis-Stone Department Store in Greensboro. In 1948, She married her husband of 74 years, Albert E. Showfety of Greensboro, and began her life as a homemaker. In 1966 the family moved to Hickory.

Evelyn was a world class mother to her 4 children.She was a relentless cheerleader for the kid’s education, making sure everyone did well in school, graduated on time and went to college, while pretty much staying out of trouble. She ramrodded this project of raising 4 children with her special gift for patience, love and kindness.

Evelyn was always grateful for the very warm welcome Pat and Frank von Drehle extended to her family when they moved to Hickory.When the kids left home, she worked part time for von Drehle Corporation and was very happy doing so. She also volunteered at Catawba Memorial Gift Shop, bringing her beautiful smile and sunny personality with her as she went on her rounds to offer reading material to patients. Later, she was the secretary of LaDanse Club at Lake Hickory Country Club for many years, bringing her own special brand of super organization to that group.

Evelyn had a beautiful singing voice and could pick up any dance step she was ever introduced to. She was always a much sought-after dance partner at the Lake Hickory CC Dances.

She loved to read and would often get engrossed and read until the wee morning hours.

She love to watch the Birds from her kitchen window

She loved flowers

She loved anything that sparkled

She loved to go to the Movies

She loved to go out to eat with Albert and their gang of friends

She loved to go to Selma and visit her recently departed friend Mary Lou Attayek

She loved to babysit the grandchildren when they were small and later get to know them as adults.

She loved her family above all else and showed us in so many ways.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her 2 brothers and sister: Robert E. Rayle Jr,William H. Rayle and Mary Cleo Osborne.

In addition to her husband of 74 years, Albert, she is survived by her sons Bert Showfety (Kay), Don Showfety (Susan) and daughters Marty Showfety of Hickory and Sandi Sheehan (John) of Wilmington.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 7,2022 at St. Aloysius Church,921 2nd St.NE,Hickory ,NCwith FatherLawrence LoMonaco officiating.The Family will receive friends at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. The Inurnment of Ashes will be held at the Church following the Mass.
