Obituary
Kathryn Bumgardner Cheek died on November 23, 2022 at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by parents, Mary Donahoo and Clarence Howard Bumgardner; husband, John Hancock Cheek, Jr.; son, John Hancock Cheek III; grandson, Andrew Cheek McCarthney; sisters, Marion Bumgardner Garrison and Mary Alice Bumgardner Smith; nephews, Calvin Plaxico, Howard Garrison and William Eason, Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Susan Cheek Eason and Eleanor Ritchey Cheek Plaxico. She is survived by daughter, Susan Kathryn Cheek and granddaughter, Natalee Glen McCarthney. Nephews: Aubrey Marvin Garrison (Jeanne) of Birmingham, AL; James Bruce Smith, Jr. (Noelle) of Atlanta, GA; Mark Swaim Smith (Melissa); Glenn Wilder Eason (Jan); John Cheek Eason (Melissa). Nieces: Allyson Smith Hilton (Andrew) of Orchard Park, NY; Georgia Plaxico Tomich. Andreas Molterer of Kitzbühel, Austria a longtime friend of the family and her business associate for many years survives Mrs. Cheek.
Mrs. Cheek attended the University of Alabama and Vanderbilt University. She studied oil painting under Santé Graziani of Yale University while her husband was an undergraduate there. She also studied watercolor at The Anderson Ranch in Aspen, Colorado under Nancy Lund.
As a great sport enthusiast, Mrs. Cheek particularly enjoyed skiing, tennis, mountain climbing and water skiing as well as music, art and dance. Along with Mr. Molterer, she owned Molterer Sports in Aspen, Colorado for 20 years.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, The Junior League of Nashville, Belle Meade Country Club, Maroon Creek Club (Aspen) and Quail Ridge Country Club (Delray); chaired The Christmas Planning Bureau for the City of Nashville for several years; and served on the board of The South Street Community Center for over ten years. She and Dr. Cheek helped run the summer camp for South Street underprivileged children. She assisted The Auction Committee for The Swan Ball for many years.
She and her family shared a dedication to protect the environment and all of its creatures, supporting The Nashville Humane Society, Friends of Radnor Lake and other causes by their actions.
Visitation will be held at The Cheek House at First Presbyterian Church on November 30, 2022 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be on December 1st at 2:00 p.m. in the Stanford Chapel at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sandra L. Randelman officiating. There is a private burial at Mt. Olivet afterward. Honorary pallbearers to be members of the family.
