Charles "Charlie" John Starkes Obituary

Passed peacefully away on Friday, November 25, 2022, at the Health Science Centre. Charles “Charlie” John Starkes born in Greenspond, Bonivasta Bay, 100 years of age.


Predeceased by his parents: George and Clara Starks; loving wife Jean (2016); sons: Frederick James “Jim” (2019) and John Charles II (2020); sisters: Jean Starks – Neville, Mary Cofield, Kathleen Starks, Lorraine Underhay and Eleanor Churchill and brothers: Chesley and George Starks.


Leaving to mourn with many cherished memories his Son Raymond; daughters- in-law: Faye Starkes of Ontario and Carol Starkes; grandchildren: Jay “John” (Stephanie Stone), Cheryl Cull (Cory) and Venette Starkes (Louy Scott); great great grandchildren: Semiah Cull, Emeric and Ellie Scott; his siblings: Marie Hynes, Bill (Maude) Starkes, Maisie (Gordon) Wilson, Fred (Ruby) Starkes and Mabel Starks, extended family, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 Mount Pearl and friends.


Our family would like to send a thank you to the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion for their friendship, compassion and care shown to Charlie over the last three years. Thank you to the staff of the Health Science Centre for your care with Charlie and a very special thank you to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36, for your friendship.


During Charlie’s 100 years he had endless accomplishments, his Service with the Royal Navy, survivor of Normandy, North Sea Convoy Duty, 75-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36, Singing Legionnaires, The Men’s Fellowship, First United Church, 23 years with the Canadian Coast Guard, Lighthouse Division, Master Electrician, the list can go on. 


Charlie will always be remembered for his love of music, he loved to entertain with his accordion and song. Charlie was one of those people that you instantly became your friend, he was always personable, easy to talk to and welcoming. He was loved by everyone. His involvement with the community will be greatly missed.


Resting at Barrett’s Funeral, 73 Commonwealth Ave., on Sunday, November 27, 2022, from 7:00 -9:00 pm and Monday, November 28, 2022, from 2:00 -4:00 pm and 7:00 -9:00 pm. The Starkes family kindly requests masks be worn to attend visitation. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 2:00 pm from First United Church. Interment to follow at The Field of Honor, Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
