Robert George Bishop Obituary

Robert ‘Bob’ Bishop was a life-long resident of Troy. Born Jan 21, 1937, Bob graduated from Troy High in 1954 and then attended Michigan Tech for one year before entering the work force in 1956.  He later returned to night school and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Lawrence Institute of Technology in 1975. He married Susan in 1957 and they were married for 46 years.

Bob started working for General Motors in 1963 and retired in 1999 from Saturn as the Senior Manager of Power Output. During his career, Bob was awarded numerous patents in automatic transmission design.

Bob was also a very active member of the community. He was elected to the Troy School board in 1976 until 1986 and was President of the Board four of his ten years. He was a founding member of the Troy Baseball Boosters and spent many hours at the ball field as a coach. He loved coaching and was very patient with his players helping them learn to catch and pitch. Bob was also active with the Troy Boys and Girls Club, the Athens Band Boosters and the Athens Athletics Booster Club. He bowled at the Elks club and also enjoyed golf. He was a founding member of the Paint Creek Country Club.  Bob served in the National Guard and was on active duty during the 1967 riots in Detroit.

According to Bob, everyone mattered. He was very good at listening to people and their needs. He enjoyed having three exchange students from Finland, Brazil and the Netherlands live with the family. He was known to help anyone who needed a meal, a bed or someone to listen to.

Bob loved spending time with his family. Beloved husband of the late Susan. Loving father of Brian (Carolann), Tim (Stacey Morains), and the late Patricia Sillman, Daniel and Randall. Dear brother of Joan Nacy, Gary Bishop (Lee) and the late Bill (Sharon) and Norman (Marie). Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be at A.J. Desmond & Sons, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy, on Friday, December 2 from 3-8PM. The service will be on Saturday, December 3 at 11AM at A.J. Desmond & Sons.
