A Visitation for Carlee Mathis, age 82, of Bristow will be from 4-6 pm on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill.  There will be a private burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, north of O’Neill, at a later date with Military Rites provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93.  Carlee passed away on November 24, 2022 at the Linden Court Nursing Home in North Platte after a short battle with cancer.  Memorials may be directed to his family for future designation.  Biglin’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Carlee Paul Mathis was born in Waverly, MO on January 7, 1940 to Martin Mathis and Marie Emelia (Scheel) Mathis.  He graduated from Santa Fe High School in Grand Pass, MO in 1958 and entered the Army.  Carlee served in the US Army Signal Corps from 1958 to 1963.

Upon leaving the Army, Carlee attended the Institute of Technology in Dallas, TX where he earned an FCC 1st Class engineering license.  He moved to O’Neill, Nebraska, where he served as the KBRX radio station engineer and radio personality until 1982.  Carlee worked at Pinkerman TV and Appliance until his retirement in 2002.

Carlee was a member of the O’Neill Gun Club and served as a reserve police officer with the O’Neill Police Department for many years.  Carlee married Carol Claughton in 1962, and to this union were born two daughters: Michelle and Stephane.

If you knew Carlee then you know he was a unique soul, but a good one.  He was a warm person who was able to find common ground with anyone he met.  He took the time to talk to others because it brought him joy.  Carlee intuitively knew how everything worked, and if he didn’t, he took it apart to find out.  Carlee was deeply invested in his love for the outdoors, which he passed down to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He spent much of his time hunting and fishing in and around Holt and Boyd counties where he created lifelong friendships.

Carlee is survived by his two daughters, Michelle (Mel) McNea of North Platte, NE and Stephane (Mark) VanderMeulen of Omaha, NE; grandchildren Alex (Amanda) McNea, Molly Walker (Morgan Schilling), Brett (Danielle) McNea, Cooper VanderMeulen and Hogan VanderMeulen; great grandchildren Rowyn, Lincoln, Mayven and Carsyn McNea and Drake Walker and three unborn great grandchildren expected next spring; one brother, Wesley (Barb) Mathis of Versailles, MO; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
