Richard B. “Ben” Hogan Obituary

Richard Bernard Hogan (affectionately known as Ben) passed away suddenly on November 23, 2022 at the age of 85. His passing was the result of a newly broken heart, both literally and figuratively, following the death of his beloved wife of 63 years, Norma.  She had passed thirty eight days prior to him.

Ben was born on December 29, 1936 in Lynn Massachusetts to the late Joseph V. and Gertrude E. Hogan.  He is survived by his son Michael (Kathy) and daughter Laurie (Denise), his four cherished grandsons Riley, Brooks, Jonathan and Kevin.  He is also survived by his brother Dennis (Kathy) of Minden, NV, three nephews, three great nieces and two great nephews.

Ben was a devoted member of St. Al's parish where he sang in the choir for many years, and served as a Eucharistic minister and adult alter server for Mass.  He was very heavily involved in volunteer work for years, following his retirement  (until COVID hit). His volunteer “career” included working for St. Vincent DePaul Charities,  Mercy Hospital, the Internal Revenue Service and the Ohio Board of Elections.

Ben was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, with a Bachelors' Degree in Business Management.  It was while he was at UC that his good friend, Art Raible, dubbed him  Ben, because Ben Hogan (the golfer) was all the rage at the time. While attending UC, he became a lifelong fraternity member of Delta Tau Delta.  He also became an excellent Bridge player, which was a skill that he held onto until his passing.  He was an avid Scrabble player and a master of crossword puzzles.

Upon graduating from college, Ben worked in sales for many different companies including, but not limited too, General Electric, Reed Manufacturing and Floating Floors.  He retired at 62, and thus began his volunteer work.  When he wasn't puttering in the yard, or volunteering, he could be found cheering for all things Cincinnati:  The Reds, Bengals, and Bearcats were his teams.   He and Norma also enjoyed traveling and playing cards with their long time friends Art and Kathy Raible and Judy and Don Heflin.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30, on Monday, December 5th, at St. Aloysious  Gonzaga Church on Bridgetown Rd, with a gathering of family and friends at 9:30 at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to St. Jude's Children's Hospital via the link below.
