Michael Peter Nevin Obituary

NEVIN, Michael Peter. Born in Williamsville, NY on January 31, 1943, an only child to James Raymond Nevin and Margaret Brinker Drinkwater, Mike Nevin passed away at home after a brief illness on November 20, 2022.  Beloved father to Dera Jardine Nevin and Remington Lee Nevin and a series of adopted cats, including Kingsley. He is also survived by his former wife and best friend Loreen Lorna Lee, whom he married on November 20, 1970. Mike studied at Haverford College in PA, the University of Maryland College Park and, after moving to Toronto in the late 1960s, the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. An original thinker and polymath, Mike enjoyed a range of interests from philosophy to natural sciences and music and was an avid student and reader. He rode his bike everywhere. He was a wit, and quick with a pun. A soft-spoken, active listener, Mike was kind and generous and lived his principles and values. He was a member of the Communist Party of Canada, voted socialist, and was an active union member who worked on the line in multiple factories. Mike was interested in global affairs, particularly nuclear disarmament, and served on the Hiroshima Nagasaki Day Coalition. Mike was a long-time resident of the Bain Co-op, and exemplified what cooperative living really means; he also sat on its Resident’s Council and on many committees and championed its community library and composting programs. Later in life Mike became the Compost Facilitator at Foodshare Toronto. In 2013, he received a Dedication Award from the Bhayana Family Foundation for his innovative methods for mid-scale, all-season composting that are community-based in nature. Mike refused to retire and instead continued to roll out composting programs, including at Toronto District School Board properties.  Mike was a remarkable force of nature, a devoted father, a champion neighbor and citizen, and a great human being. He will be deeply missed.  There will be a Celebration of Life for Mike Nevin on Sunday, November 27, 2022, 1-3 pm at the Bain Community Center, 100 Bain Ave, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to Mike’s favorite causes, including Foodshare and the Hiroshima Day Coalition. He would also encourage you to adopt a “used” cat or dog from your local shelter, to recycle, and to support your local arts scene.
