Travis Wesley Lewis Obituary

Travis Wesley Lewis, 78, passed away on November 21, 2022, with his wife and daughter at his side.


He was the son of the late Peyton Wesley Lewis and Willa Mae Jernigan Lewis.


Travis was born in Tifton, GA and lived there until the age of 12. His family moved to Jacksonville, FL where he attended Paxton High School. He continued his education at Jones Business College and graduated with a Batchelor of Science Degree from the University of North Florida.


He joined the United States Air Force in 1965, during the Vietnam War; received his basic training in Texas and then was stationed in Mississippi and Georgia.


He married Charlotte Bowen from Jacksonville, FL in 1966, while stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. Upon completion of his military service, he joined General Electric Company, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a dedicated employee and won several prestigious awards for outstanding performance. He loved playing golf and after retiring he cherished playing almost weekly with his Christian buddies, Ed Smith, Jimmy Bumgarner and Donald Braxton. He also loved making woodworking pieces and gave many of them to family and friends.


Travis was a great husband and father, making sure to provide financially for them and sharing with duties of running a household. He loved teaching his daughter how to repair and make things. He was a quiet man who had a dry sense of humor. He had a knack for trivia knowledge, especially to do with history. He loved his country, her flag, and to be an American. He served many years as an usher at Highland Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC and participated in many activities of the church.


Due to failing health, he was unable to serve at Parkland Baptist Church in Winter Haven, FL when he moved there in 2019.


He leaves behind his devoted wife of 56 years, Charlotte Bowen Lewis, and beautiful daughter, Melissa Lewis Cherry; sisters-in-law, Marsha Ellis, Shirley Dickinson and Linda Bowen; his brothers-in-law, Walker Ellis and Dan Bowen; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Peyton and Willa Mae Lewis; brother, Danny Peyton Lewis; brother-in-law, Bob Dickinson; sister-in-law, Joy Lewis; niece Renee Ellis McHugh and Cousins.


Travis fought a long and hard battle 2 ½ years with a brain tumor but now is in the Arms of Jesus, where he no longer is in pain.


He will be missed dearly but as Christians we know we will see each other again when we cross over.


The family will receive friends from 1:00pm till 2:00pm, Friday, December 2, 2022 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00pm.
