Obituary

McLaughlin, Michael William

On Saturday November 19, 2022, at the age of 82 Mike passed away peacefully in his home in Squamish BC. He will be missed by his children, Cathey McLaughlin (Perry Cunningham), Lisa McLaughlin (Ian Thornton) and Shawn McLaughlin (Anja Charleton). Cherished grandfather to Liam and Isabelle. Dear brother of Margaret Peck, Phoebe Gibson and predeceased by his sister Theresa Laporte and brother Ed McLaughlin. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews and dear friend Marilyn Stout.

Dad was a man on the move from the very beginning, travelling across the country many times for work and fun. If you ever mentioned a place that you might be visiting, he had a story about “the time I worked there”. His many years working in northern Ontario, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut were some of the toughest jobs but also made for some of his fondest memories. He finally settled in Squamish BC in 1993 with his son, making many friends in the construction industry.

Dad never met a stranger and could turn a 20-minute errand into an afternoon event because ‘he met some lad he knew’. He loved to tease and share his quick wit with anyone he met but he also didn’t suffer fools or have patience for any delays or difficulties when he wanted a task completed.

He had a deep faith in God and channeled that connection with the lord into his community, lending a helping hand at St. Joseph’s Parish in Squamish and supporting the Contemplative nuns of the Order of Preachers at the Queen of Peace Monastery. He built great friendships through his involvement with the Knights of Columbus and was immensely proud of his standing as a 4th degree Knight.

Dad faced life’s hardships with acceptance, focusing on what he could do rather than what he couldn’t do. His recent stroke changed his life but not his outlook. We deeply appreciate the love and support that his friends and neighbours showed him over the last year.

Friends are invited to the funeral mass at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 2449 The Blvd, Squamish on December 1, 2022. at 11:oo a.m. Interment to follow at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Quebec in 2023.
