David Holroyd Obituary

David Holroyd passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on November 23, 2022, at the age of 73. His passing ends a long and courageous battle with heart and lung diseases.

Dave will be fondly remembered by his loving wife and soulmate of 53 years, Marg (nee Gibson), and both of his children, Rob (Tina Smith) and Mandy (Orval Thompson). He will be dearly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Sidney, Oakley, Kai, and Harrison as well as the two fluffy ones, Burton, and Willow.

Born on October 14, 1949, as the youngest of eight, Dave is survived by his sister Lillian Hutchinson (Fred) of Thornbury, his in laws Peter and Mary Gibson, Charlotte Holroyd, Fay & Jack Gieg, Laurel Gibson, son in law Don Cockerill, and a great many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved niece Ashley Gibson, his parents Clarence and Zillah Holroyd, his parents in law John and Dorothy Gibson, and his siblings Willard, Helen, Marguerite, Bruce, Betty, and Audrey. Dave took pride in many aspects of life, although above all, Dave felt unconditional pride and love for his family and friends.

A graduate of CCI and Ryerson, if Dave set his mind to something, he excelled at it. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he found the greatest success in the newspaper business and sales. Dave found a career later in life as a financial advisor which suited him perfectly as he was always reading, learning, and noticing. These qualities broadened his experiences during his travels and adventures with Marg and countless family and friends’ vacations. Our family will forever be grateful for the memories made during our European adventure in 2019 to celebrate 50 beautiful years of marriage.

Dave was very active in our community, most significantly, he was proudly involved for many years with the Kinsmen Club of Collingwood, the Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club and Trinity United Church. A lover of sports and activities, Dave was an avid golfer and enjoyed basketball, badminton, billiards, and squash in his younger years. He tolerated skiing for the sake of his family – likely the only one at the Collingwood Ski Club to read a newspaper all the way through on a ski day.

Dave’s passion for music flowed into his dancing shoes; he was never one to shy away from the dance floor. Although his physical challenges in recent years kept him away from the dance floor, his love of music endured. He is now free to dance once again.

A Celebration of Dave’s Life will take place at the Collingwood Legion on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 1-4:00 pm. with remembrances at 2 p.m. The service will be available by livestream Holroyd Service.
