Donald E. Vincent, Sr. Obituary

Donald Edward Vincent Sr. was born July 2, 1922, in Greensboro, NC to the late John Vincent and Hattie Lena Compton Vincent. Donald was a graduate of James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC in 1940. In that same year he moved to Alexandria, VA, married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Flack and they had their firstborn child, Evelyn Jean. In the early years, he held a variety of jobs to include dishwasher, brick mason, janitor and ticketer at the movie theater to support his growing family. In 1942, Donald worked for the American Red Cross and the Alexandria Health Department. It was at the Health Department where he obtained his life-long skill to "Look, Listen and Learn." In 1948, Donald was hired at the Dixie Mart Typewriter Shop where he learned all the aspects of the trade and eventually purchased the business. This purchase made him one of the few small Black Business owners in the area. This network afforded him the opportunity to become a member of The Optimus Club and The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The Dixie Mart was very successful until the technology boom arrived which made the use of typewriters obsolete. Although he was a business owner, he always had a janitorial side hustle which led him to become the sexton of Aldersgate United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1962 where he loyally served for over 50 years. While at Aldersgate, he made many life-long friends, traveled abroad, spoke at special events, acted in plays and sang with his younger brother Charles on several occasions. We believe Donald started the concept of "Bring your Child To Work Day" by bringing his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the neighborhood kids to work with him faithfully at Aldersgate. Donald LOVED the LORD! He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA for 70+ years. Donald loved to sing, he was a dedicated member of various choirs in the church until he moved to Triangle, VA in 2015 with his daughter, Evelyn Jean, where he later became a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA. Throughout the years, Donald remained active, his motto was "Always Be Ready." He often returned to Greensboro, NC to attend his class reunions until he was the only class member remaining. He traveled to multiple destinations with his family and friends often becoming the center of attention. He was an avid Redskins fan and would attend training camp, practices and games with his granddaughter, Donna Brown Evans (who is also named after him). Donald's lively spirit made him loved by many. He was a proud member of the Gum Springs, South County and Woodbridge Senior Centers where he made many friends that looked after him. Donald must have been the BINGO champ as every week he would come home with shampoo, soap, toilet paper and one time, the strangest doll. When asked where he got all that stuff, he proudly responded, "I won it playing BINGO." Donald was also a consistent lottery player. When he won, he would always give a portion of his winnings to the church first and would share the rest of his winnings with those in need. Donald was known by many names within the community, such as "Mr. V, Shorty, Mr. Donnie, and Don." He was affectionately known to his family as "Daddy, Papa, Uncle Donnie and Granddaddy." Donald was blessed to have recently celebrated his 100th birthday where he was able to fellowship with family and friends shortly before his passing. You would find Donald often singing his favorite song, "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand," which he did until his death. Donald was preceded in death by his teenage sweetheart and beloved wife of 56 years Evelyn, son Edwin, daughter Deborah Vincent Kenney, grandsons: Ronnie Everett and Imani Kenney, great grandson Rommel Vincent. He leaves to cherish his memories: 3 daughters Evelyn Jean Brown (Brezeairlu), Sharon Parks (Joe), Kathy Murphy (Al), 1 son, Donald Vincent Jr. (Gloria), 1 sister-in-law Billie Hutton, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
