Pauline “Polly” Sutton, formerly of Gaffney, SC, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 2022, in Beaufort, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, William “Bill” Sutton. During her long illness, she was surrounded and cared for by her daughter, Cynthia Meyer, son-in-law, Kris Meyer, many loving caregivers, and Hospice nurses and staff. Her step-grandsons are Richard and William Meyer.

Polly was a country girl, born and raised in the Swainsville community near Shelby, NC. She attended Lattimore School (Boiling Springs), Appalachian Teachers College, and earned her Masters in Education at UNC-Greensboro. Polly was a first grade teacher for her entire career and was loved by her students. She retired from Central School in Gaffney.

She enjoyed vegetable gardening, working in her yard and growing beautiful flowers. Polly loved music and dancing; she and Bill were excellent ballroom dancers. She also loved decorating, crafting, sewing, entertaining, baking pies, eating ice cream, bird watching and playing with her cat(s). She had a caring and giving spirit and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Most of all, Polly was devoted to her family. She spent many of her retired years caring for her elderly mother, Pearl McSwain, and disabled brother, George McSwain, until their deaths.

Polly attended Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Shelby, throughout her life, and was also a member of First Baptist Church in Gaffney.

A remembrance gathering will be held at 4 p.m., Mon. Dec. 5, at her residence in Beaufort. Rev. Patrick Whaley will officiate. 

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 8 at the Cleveland Memorial Park mausoleum chapel in Boiling Springs, NC. Rev. Derek Greene will officiate.
