James Ray Kirby Obituary

James Ray Kirby, 84, passed away on November 25th, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. Jim was born in Madison, South Dakota to William and Lucille Abbott Kirby. He grew up in Mankato, MN and Casper, WY and graduated from Natrona County High School in Casper. He attended college and graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN and remained a dedicated alum throughout his life. Jim was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Puerto Rico, teaching English. Jim worked in Education and enjoyed a successful career as a principal, helping students and teachers alike. He made a point to learn the names of each student in his school and wanted his children to know someone cared about them. If there were treats at school that needed to be eaten and enjoyed, the staff could count on Mr. Kirby to do his part. Jim was a member of numerous civic and religious organizations and was a long time supporter of First Presbyterian Church in Casper, where his father was once the minister. Jim enjoyed playing and watching sportsbasketball, softball and football were among his favorites, especially if the Twins, Vikings or Golden Gophers were playing. He was a voracious reader, and enjoyed keeping current on politics and serving in various volunteer roles. People from all walks of life were drawn to Jim's quick wit and generous, happy spirit. Jim married Sheila in 1967 and they had one daughter togethera feisty little redhead that kept them busy. Above all, he was a dedicated father and provider for his family. We all loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers William, Richard and Alan. Jim is survived by his wife Sheila and daughter Susan, son-in-law Chip and three beloved grandchildren, Kelly, Kevin and Scott, of North Bend, WA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special place in his heart. A memorial service will be held at Church of The Master on February 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm (6659 E. University Drive in Mesa, AZ). Additionally, a summertime memorial and interment service will be held in Casper, WY at First Presbyterian Church and Highland Cemetery at a date to be determined.
