Shirley Jean "Nanny" Tyer Obituary

Shirley Jean “Nanny” Tyer, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, in Rusk, Texas. She was born to Virgil Carnell Black and Leona Mae Felder Black on September 7, 1934, in Alto, Texas.

Shirley was affectionally known as “Nanny” by all who knew and loved her. She loved the Lord, and that love helped her guide herself and others through life. She was a natural caregiver. Anytime someone was in need, she was there to visit or with a homemade meal if needed. She loved writing and sending people cards. She cherished and kept every card she received.

Shirley worked at Lufkin State School for 30 years. After retiring, she began babysitting. Stopping only 4 years ago.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband; Howard Tyer, sons; Bob Tyer and Ronnie Tyer, and sister; Erma Lee Palmer.

Shirley is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Sherry and Tim Germany of Alto, Tx., grandchildren; Ralph Johnston of New Diana, Tx., Shannon and Jerry Flowers of Pollok, Tx., Nathan and Tori Johnston or Longview, Tx., Brandi and Doug Bing of Alto, Tx., Timothy Germany of Alto, Tx., Cameron and Linda Tyer of New Braunfels, Tx., Collin Tyer of Lockhart, Tx., Brandon and Amy Tyer of Hudson, Tx., Josh Tyer of Alto, Tx.; 24 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022, 5:00-7:00pm. Funeral service will be held at Hilltop Baptist Church Sunday, November 27, 2022, 2:00pm with Pastor Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery.
