Sidney Earl Harrison Obituary

Sidney Earl Harrison, age 78, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Wednesday, February 9th, 2022. He was the fourth of five children born to the union of the late Langston and Ardellia (Reid) Harrison on September 27, 1943.

He was baptized at a young age at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. In 1961, he graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army where served his country as a tanker prior to joining the entertainment division and singing in a Doo Wop Group in the USO. While stationed in Munich, Germany for 5 years, he met and married Helene Hopp. After returning to the United States, he and his wife welcomed two children, Suzette and Langston (Poncho) E. Harrison, III to complete their family.

Sidney always had a flare and love for music. Growing up, he and his brother, Melvin, sung in a group and auditioned for Barry Gordy at Motown Records. They even opened for Sammy Davis, Jr. at the Peppermint Lounge. At the age of 45, he taught himself to play the bass and went on to play with groups such as The Soft Touch, the Sauce, Mood Swings, Swing Shift, Tom Turner and Slow Burn, and the Jim Petrarca Jazz Trio. Most recently he was learning to play the piano. He passed on the gift of music on to his children; Langston played the trumpet, and Suzette played the violin. Sidney had a gift for art and painting as well. He stayed active by playing pool in 2 leagues and playing tennis. Sidney never knew a stranger and was always the life of the party. He was a wonderful father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He worked for Dana Corporation for 20 years and retired from Chrysler Jeep at the age of 57 in 2001. After his marriage to Helene ended, he was in a relationship with the late Charris Davis for 25 years until her passing, and most recently, 14 years with Vickie McClellan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Langston Harrison, Sr. and Ardellia, brothers Bobby Harrison and Melvin Harrison, Helene London, and Charris Davis.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Langston (Athalene) E. Harrison, Jr. and Sister, Joan McCreary; daughter, Suzette (Kevin) Rushing; son, Langston E.
