Minnie Laura Glaspie Toledo, Ohio Obituary

Minnie Laura Glaspie

Minnie Laura Hodges-Glaspie was the seventh born out of nine children in Toledo, Ohio on April 1, 1926. She was the daughter of the late John Robert Hodges, and Irene Nickels-Hodges. At 95 years old, she made her transition to the next life the same way she lived in her time on earth -- on her own terms on September 3, 2021. She transitioned peacefully with her family by her side.

Minnie inherited her gifts for social justice, compassion, courage and strength from her father, John (known as Jack). He was known for being a Toledo Police Officer and Sergeant Detective. He was one of the first four African Americans to be hired in the city as a police officer and was considered one of the early pioneers that rose above tokenism. He died with many commendations for bravery as noted in the Toledo Police Museum.

Minnie Glaspie was married to Ernest L. Glaspie Sr. He preceded her in death in January 1990. They were blessed with three children: Regina Cecile Glaspie-Winkfield, Deborah Elaine Glaspie, and Ernest Louis Glaspie, Jr. She was an active member of Warren A.M.E church and later became a devoted member of the First Church of God for the last 45 years. She served in various ministries such as Usher Board, Light of the World Congregation, and Saved to Serve. She never met a stranger she didn’t show love to, and would offer her home as a place of respite to friends and family.

As a product of the Toledo Public School System, Minnie had a strong desire to serve her community. Subsequently, she volunteered for many community service activities such as The Red Hat Society, Meals on Wheels, and a Senior Center Inc. Receptionist. She also served as a volunteer during the presidential elections as a phone bank worker and an advocate to get out the vote. Even at 80 years old she would canvas for the vote door-to-door on the West End of Toledo.

Minnie’s career in public service included her work as a section leader at Maumee Youth Camp in Liberty Center, Ohio for many years. As a fierce advocate for students with developmental disabilities, Minnie became a teacher at the Larc Lane School in the 1960s. In 1990, she retired from The Child Study Institute Detention Center as a Section Leader for the girl’s floor. She had a strong desire to end injustices for the city’s youth; especially, girls who had difficulty adjusting at home, school and in the community.

Her siblings that preceded her in death: Helen, Robert, Amos, Donald, Ollie Mae, William and Lawrence.

She leaves the following family members to cherish her memory: her sister Thelma Dougherty, sister-in-law Billye Hodges; three children; Mrs. Regina Cecile Glaspie-Winkfield (Marc Winkfield), Ms. Deborah Glaspie, and Mr. Ernest Louis Glaspie,Jr. (wife: Nichelle Glaspie); five grandchildren, Damon Alan Glaspie, Iyonna Minrel Glaspie-Babb (deceased), Joslyn Blair Winkfield, James Alan Winkfield, Ernest Louis Glaspie III known as “Trey” (deceased) and Nolita Pore.
