<p>Service will be held Friday, 11:00 am, wake at 10:00 am at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Visitation Thursday from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the House of Day Chapel. Mr. Carl Vester Nelson Sr., 84 of Toledo, Ohio passed away at the Sylvania at Arbor (Hospice Care Unit) in Toledo, Ohio on Friday, November 13, 2015 after a long illness. He was born September 26, 1931 in Newton Mississippi to the late Elijah and Mary Towner-Nelson. He accepted Christ at an early age in his life. In 1950 he was called to serve in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict, South Korea and received an honorable discharge upon completion. Upon returning to Toledo, Ohio Carl married his childhood sweetheart Mattie Ruth Crudup on Saturday, February 12, 1955 in Toledo, Ohio and to this union five children were born; Carl Jr., Richard, Bruce, Tina and Keith. He soon took a position at A&amp;P Tea Company where he was employed for twenty-one years; nineteen were in the bakery department. After the closure of A&amp;P Tea Company, he established his own business called Carl's Trucking Service. He also embarked on several other entrepreneurial endeavors and he was certainly the jack of all trades until his retirement in 1986. In his earlier years he was very active with his son's at Ryder Elementary School as a Den Leader in the Boy Scouts of America for years when he taught many young men in the neighborhood outdoor skills such as camping and fishing. He also served as a member for many years in the Supreme Grand Lodge No. 77 of the International Free &amp; Accepted Modern Mason, of Toledo, Ohio. In his spare time, he would often play the piano and he would love to sing his favorite song "Sentimental Journey". Carl enjoyed fishing with his kids but his true passion was farming. Carl was known to grow every vegetable and fruit in his garden along with having livestock both in Toledo, Ohio and Forest, Mississippi and he was extremely proud making sure that he took care of his family which he truly loved. He was definitely a country man at heart. Carl was preceded in death by both parents Elijah and Mary Nelson and son Bruce Nelson, brothers Ernest, John and Ezell Nelson and sisters, Lucille Cooler and Allie Mays, he leaves his cherished memories to his loving wife of 60 years, Mattie Ruth Nelson; sons, Carl Nelson, Jr., Richard Nelson, Sr., Keith (Tasha) Nelson, Sr., daughter Tina Nelson-Roberts all of Toledo, Ohio; Grandchildren Stephanie (Alvin) Jones, Richard Nelson, Jr. , Ahmed Nelson, Jermaine (Darian) Huddleston, Timothy Roberts, Deon Murdock, Karl'vel Roberts, Keith Nelson, Jr. and Cheyney Nelson along with his sister Overseer Birnett Carson, sister-in laws Alma Jean Nelson, Freddie Nelson all of Toledo, Ohio and Lois Joseph of Forest, Mississippi; 7 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The Nelson family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Ohio Veterans Homes in Sandusky, Ohio, Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, Ohio, The Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Healthcare in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Arbors at Sylvania (Hospice Care Unit) in Toledo, Ohio for their sincere and devoted attention, comfort and care.</p>
