Ulysses S. Grant

<p>Ulysses "Cecil" Grant, age 82, transitioned into eternal rest on Friday, May 7, 2013 at Fairview Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. One of six children born to the union of John and Eula Mae Grant, Ulysses was born in Ideal, Georgia on November 21, 1930. He confessed his life to Christ while attending Bethel AME Church in Cusseta, Georgia at an early age. Ulysses attended Cusseta Public Schools. Upon graduation in 1948, he relocated to Toledo, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, he met Ida Belle May, from this union they were blessed with daughter Samantha Clare. Ulysses joined Phillips Temple CME Church where he served on the Steward Board and sang in the Mass Choir. A gifted baritone, he also sang with the renowned Phillips Temple Harmonizer Juniors. The group later revised its name to The Masters of Harmony. In 1951, Ulysses was drafted in the U.S Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by the U.S. Postal Service. He was subsequently promoted to supervisor and worked in the capacity until promoted to supervisor and worked in the capacity until retirement. Ulysses married the former Catherine Murphy. Their martial union was blessed with two children, Daniel and Sheila. Ulysses was an avid amateur golfer and bowler. He won over 40 golf tournament trophies throughout the nation. In addition, He was the longtime golf tournament director for the former Mid-Western Golf Association. Ulysses also amassed numerous bowling awards and trophies as a member of the Young Seniors Bowling League. Concerned with the growing community problem of juvenile delinquency, Ulysses co-founded the Linques Neighborhood Center at 401 North Hawley Street. The center still exists today. Ulysses was preceded in death by both parents, John and Eula Mae Grant, sisters Lessie Mae Radney and Anna Ruth Wright, brother Joe L. Grant, and son Daniel Grant. He leaves to cherish his memory brothers Reverend Jesse (Florence) Grant of Concord, North Carolina and Rudolphus(Esther) Grant of Toledo, Ohio; daughters, Samantha Clare (Tyreese) McGee and Shelia (Keith) Armstrong; three great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, kind friends, and special friends; Wendy Kern, Margaret Harper, Elsie Seay, and Berene Miller. The family of Ulysses Grant gratefully acknowledges the care provided by Fairview Nursing and Rehabilitation.</p>
