Elouise Calloway Obituary

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF

ELOUISE CALLOWAY

Elouise Calloway was born on July 9, 1909 in Monroeville, Alabama to the late Julius and Lillie Watson. She was one of fourteen children.

Elouise was united in holy matrimony to the late Obie Calloway on October 16, 1926. To this union one son was born, Hiram Calloway, Sr. The Calloway family moved to Toledo, Ohio in the late 1940’s. Obie preceded Elouise in death in 1989. Elouise was also blessed with a stepdaughter, Evelyn Calloway Smith. Evelyn preceded Elouise in death in 2003.

Upon moving to Toledo, Elouise became a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as a missionary as well as in the kitchen. Elouise remained an active member of St. Paul until her health began to fail.

Elouise’s family was the joy of her life. Elouise brought laughter, comfort, encouragement, support, and most of all, unconditional love to her family. Elouise was known for her kindness, humor, and patience. Elouise was like a mother and grandmother not only to her own but also to her nieces and nephews. In July, 2009, Elouise’s family and friends came together to celebrate her 100th birthday. What a magnificent and honorable celebration!

Elouise put away the cares of this world and went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 14, 2010. What an irony that this wonderful person whose life exemplified love was taken to her heavenly home on the day that we celebrate love. Elouise leaves to cherish her beautiful memory and continue her legacy: her cherished and devoted son, Hiram, Sr., daughter-in-law, Betty; grandchildren, Hiram, Jr. (Nicole), Linda, Starlett, Albert, Denise, Reginald, and Erica; seventeen great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Herbert Blay; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and many friends.

We will miss our beloved Elouise but in our sadness we are so very thankful. God has blessed us to have her for so very long. His grace and mercy has truly endured. To God be the glory for the things that He has done!
