Helen B. Braithwaite, 97, died on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the Friendship Village Health Center, Upper St. Clair, PA.


She was born October 5, 1925, in Danbury, Ohio, the daughter of Grover J.T. Kihlken and Alta H. Kihlken.


Helen was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Braithwaite, in June 2010. Helen and Dave were both born and grew up in Ohio and graduated from Lakeside High School. They were high school sweethearts and married on July 15, 1945, and celebrated almost 65 years of life together.


Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Sykes of York, PA, Deborah Pulianas of Bristol, IN, and Catherine Chamberlin of Clayton, MO. Helen and Dave have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Helen was a Girl Scout leader for ten years and co-chair of Community Concerts in Valparaiso, IN. She sang in choirs since the age of 18 including church choirs, the Friendship Village choir, and the college choir at ONU. Helen was often a soloist at family weddings and at the the Red Stocking Review in Pleasant Hills, PA. Helen volunteered at Magee Hospital for 35 years and was on Magee's Volunteer Service Board of Directors. A member of PEO sorority, Chapter G, Helen enjoyed PEO activities and friendships right up until her final days. Like her mother, Helen loved to sew and do needlework.


A private burial service will be held on December 2nd at the National Alleghenies Cemetery, Bridgeville, PA., where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Dave, U.S. Army veteran. A memorial service is planned for 3pm on that day at Friendship Village, St. Clair Room, for FV friends and immediate family. A Celebration of Life service will be planned for a later date at Faith Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh, PA.


The family requests no flowers at this time but that memorials be made to one of three beneficiaries. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 80 Bartley Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241, or to the Friendship Village Employee Fund, 1290 Boyce Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241, or to Gallagher Hospice, 1370 Washington Pike, Suite 401B, Bridgeville, PA 15017.
