Verna Simenson Obituary

Verna was promoted to glory on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, from Vallhaven Care Center in Neenah, WI, after a brief illness. She moved from Decorah 4 years ago to be near her only child, Vergene Miller. Verna was born in Ray, ND, to Albert and Myrtle Newhouse. She, along with her two siblings, Maynard and Stella (Johnson), helped her parents farm near Burr Oak, IA. Verna graduated from Decorah High School and Cedar Falls College with a teaching degree. She taught in Burr Oak's one room school. She and Eugene Simenson, who eloped on March 3, 1934, were married for 63 years. They lived exclusively in the Decorah area where Verna participated in many activities at Silvercrest Golf Club, VFW, First Lutheran Church, and the Rebecah Lodge. During Eugene's time as county sheriff, Verna cooked delicious and balanced meals for the jail "guests" from 1962-1976, before Eugene retired. Before moving to Neenah, Verna lived at the Oneota Care Facility for 3 years. She enjoyed playing rummy and cribbage, working crossword puzzles, reading, and watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy". She is survived by her daughter, two grandsons - Jed (Kaisa) Miller of Madison and John Miller of Boulder, CO, one red-headed great grand-daughter, Sulia Grace, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Memorials are being set up for First Lutheran Church (youth programs) and Silvercrest Golf Club through Vergene Miller, 2116 Henry St., Neenah, WI 54956. The memorial service is being planned for spring 2011, at the Newhouse farm near Burr Oak. Interment will be at the Decorah Cemetery at that time.
