Peter Edward Castro Obituary

Pittsford: Peter Edward Castro, 80, of Pittsford, beloved husband, loving father and grandfather died at home on November 17 of complications due to Parkinson’s.

Born in Hackensack, NJ he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Levine Castro; daughter, Stephanie Castro and son-in-law Michael Wemple of Westlake, Ohio and daughter, Wendy Castro of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Audrey Wemple; and sister, Joan Nordbotten (Svein) of Bergen, Norway; leaving behind sister-in-law, Neil Ann Levine and five nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Norway.

He is predeceased by his mother, Mildred Langen Castro and father, Herbert Edward Castro and brother-in-law, Richard J. Levine.

Peter attended Cazenovia High School where he spent his summers as an expert crew for many yacht club races. He earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and Doctorate in Applied Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He spent his 36 year career as a research scientist at the Eastman Kodak Company. He served as Chair and senior lecturer of the Master’s program in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Rochester. He never lost his passion for using mathematics to solve industrial problems. Peter served on numerous professional boards and committees within the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Mathematical Society.

Peter was a serial enthusiast, pursuing photography, road cycling and roller-blading; then later as a volunteer at the George Eastman Museum and lover of all word puzzles. Whatever he did, he did with intelligence and a singular focus and determination. He met his wife Nancy as a college sophomore and together they built a life filled with love of family, love of the outdoors and a curiosity that took them on travels throughout Europe and the developing nations of the world. The family would like to thank Peter’s doctors Dr. Karen Chruscicki and Dr. Ralph Jozefowicz. The help offered by Joy Lipari and her wonderful staff at Professional Assistance for Seniors was immeasurable, particularly Peter’s caring aides Joy and Brittany and in his last hours, Lorie, all of whom cared for Peter with kindness, patience and humor.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel (2305 Monroe Ave) on Tuesday, November 22 from 10-11AM with a Service to be held at 11AM. Interment to follow at White Haven Memorial Park. Friends are invited to call at the home Tuesday from 4-6PM and Wednesday from 2-4PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to The George Eastman Museum or Michael J. Fox Foundation.
