Gerald R Pennay Obituary

Gerald R. Pennay, 87, of Kingsley, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 6, 2022. Born April 22, 1935, in Harford, PA, he was the son of Gaylord Mortimer and Mabel Ellen (Tiffany) Pennay. Gerald is preceded in death by three siblings: Merle Pennay ( Daytona Beach, Florida), Charlotte Zick (Kingsley, PA) and Carol Smith (West Pittston, PA).

Gerald graduated from Harford High School and then completed Reisch American School of Auctioneering (1958). In 1965, he married his wife Ruth (Smith) and together they raised a family and began their auction business.

As a young man, he worked in his quarries while he built his auction company. He established Gerald R. Pennay Auctioneer which became Pennay and Son Auctioneers when his son Jerry Jr. became a full time auctioneer.   He was a self employed man with a tireless work ethic and could often be heard saying, "It's not work when you love what you do."

Gerald operated his auction business for over 50 years. He contracted many onsite farm and personal property sales and carved out a reputation for friendly, trust worthy service. Customers came from near and far to enjoy his Monday night auctions at the Hop Bottom Fire Hall. He loved the fact that his auctions brought people together to relax and have fun in the comfortable jovial environment he created. He was loved by his employees and they often remarked that they felt like part of his family. Retirement was not a word Jerry could embrace and even up until a few days before his death he was asking his family, "When can we have another auction?"

"Jerry" also enjoyed his service to Peoples National Bank as a member of their Board of Directors for over thirty years and was elected Chairman of the Board in 2001. Serving his community in this way was one of the highlights of his life.

As a man of great faith, Jerry could quite often be heard triumphantly and spontaneously belting out his favorite old hymns whenever and wherever he chose. He taught his children and his grandchildren his great love for Jesus Christ and he knew that Heaven was going to be amazing!

At the center of his life was his family. He loved them all with a fierce passion and became interested and involved with everything they pursued.  While spending time with them, he often told them how proud he was of each of them for their individual work ethic and accomplishments. His presence, his personality, his advice and his love will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ruth Smith Pennay, daughter Kimberly (Jan) Waltz of Manheim, PA, son Gerald (Jenny) Pennay Jr. of Kingsley, PA, and grandchildren; Zachary, Alexis, Lindsay, and Kassidy Waltz; Macey and Stella Pennay.
