John Walker (Jack) Guion, 90, passed away November 1, 2022 with friends and family by his side.
Jack was born September 2, 1932 in Charlotte, NC to Elwood Walker and Susie Virginia Scott Guion. Jack was a lifelong resident of the Charlotte area. He attended Central High School, graduating in 1950. He spent three years at Duke University before enlisting in the Army. After serving two years at Fort Jackson, Jack returned to Duke to complete his Bachelor’s degree in accounting. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and remained an avid Duke fan his entire life.
After college, Jack returned to Charlotte where he worked as an accountant for Celanese Corporation and Murray Distributing Company. He also taught accounting classes at Central Piedmont Community College before starting his own accounting/tax practice. Jack and his wife, Sunny, opened The Learning Tree-a tutoring center on Monroe Road. After her passing, he went into business with Mark and Amy (his son and daughter-in-law) as part owner of Sunny Days After School in Mint Hill.
Jack was an active member of the Matthews Optimist Club.
Together with a group of his closest friends, Jack founded and operated the Matthews youth sports program that eventually became Matthews Athletic and Recreation Association (MARA). He coached Little League and worked with Pop Warner football teams. He was also a leader for the YMCA Indian Guides (Kiowa tribe).
Jack enjoyed making friends as a Ham radio operator. He was a collector of clocks of all kinds, which made for a very noisy home when the clock struck the hour! He was also a train enthusiast as evidenced by the tracks that ran around the ceiling and floor of the ”depot” in his house. There was no electronic device ever invented that he didn’t own or hope to own. He loved his dachshunds, Charlie and Marilyn.
Ever a kind soul with a ready smile, Jack acquired friends with ease. He was part of a small group that started at Forest Hill Church and continued for more than 30 years. He loved to talk and enjoyed witty banter. Even in his final months, he could carry on an intelligent conversation and remember more details than most of us have already forgotten. He could get distracted in the middle of a story, go off on another tangent, and then come back to the exact same spot in the initial story without missing a beat.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sunny Rose Guion, his son, John Walker Guion, Jr., as well as the mother of his children, Betty Guion Hunter and great-grandson, Levi Scott Duville. He is survived by his children, Benjie and wife Terry (Davidson, NC), Betsy Fosina and husband John (New Rochelle, NY), Scott and wife Wanda (Waxhaw, NC), Mark and wife Amy (Mint Hill, NC). Also surviving are grandchildren John (Kelly) Guion, Shannon (Ira) Duville, Matthew (Catherine) Fosina, Michael (Victoria) Fosina, Joshua (Lauren) Guion, David (Stephanie) Guion, Payton (Devin Stevens) Guion, Katharine (Angeliki Gousetis) Fosina, Kristen Fosina, and Garrett Guion. He is also survived by nine great-grandsons, sister Lucy Dunn (Ernie) Martin, brother Bill (Shiras) Guion, several nieces and nephews, and his long-time friend, Rob Rochelle.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 101 Colville Rd, Charlotte on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:00 pm, with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Young Life of Lake Norman, PO Box 986, Davidson, NC 28036 or to Hospice and Palliative Care-Palmetto Region, 1057 Red Ventures Dr., Suite 150, Fort Mill, SC 29707.
