Augustus General Spight Obituary

AG “Augie” Spight passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence. AG was born on April 16, 1941 to Rev. G.B. and Della (Foster) Spight in Ripley, Mississippi. AG accepted Christ at an early age in Mississippi and continued regular participation in Christian worship in Battle Creek, Michigan. AG attended Macedonia M.B. Church and later Washington Heights United Methodist Church until his declining health. AG graduated from Line Street High School in Ripley, Mississippi in 1960. He continued his education at Alcorn A & M College in Lorman, Mississippi and Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He graduated with his B.A. Degree in Social Science in 1964 and later received his Master’s Degree from Michigan State University.


After graduation he moved to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1965. AG served in the United States Marine Corp and the United States Marine Corp Reserve from January 5, 1966 until December 15, 1967 and served in Vietnam. He received an Honorable Discharge in December of 1967. AG was a teacher in the Battle Creek Public School System from 1968 until 1996. AG taught Social Studies at Northwestern Junior High School for 30 years. He retired in June of 1996. AG enjoyed gardening, watching sports, listening to music and grilling.


On December 28, 1968 he married his wife, Bettie Jo Wade of 53 years. To this union no children were born. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Bettie Jo Spight; sister, Ethelene Hatch of Ripley, Mississippi; nephews: Michael Freeman of Benton Harbor, MI, Sydney Adams of Ripley, MS, David Spight of Hattiesburg, MS, Samuel E. Griffin and Fred Griffin both of Memphis, TN; nieces: Debra Watson of Kentwood, MI, Shana F. Griffin, Helen Griffin, Elizabeth Griffin and Monifa J. Ajanaku all of Memphis, TN, Shana Spight of Maumelle, AR, Melinda Hatch of Calhoun City, MS; and other great nieces and nephews.


AG was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Jamie Ophelia Spight, Essie Braddock, Eldora Griffin, Lexia Stovall, and Magnolia Freeman; and five brothers: Morris, G.B., Jr., Charley, William, and Paul Spight.


Visitation will be held on Monday, November 7, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service.
