Elisha Alphonzo Harrell Obituary

Alphonzo Harrell transition to his heavenly home on October 28, 2022. He was the son of the late Alonza and Mamie Harrell, he was born in Gates County, North Carolina.


He graduated High School and attended Elizabeth City State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and continued his education to receive a Master of Science Degree from Hampton Institute and a Certificate of Advance Study from Virginia Tech University.


Alphonzo married his lovely soul mate Mary, they were married for 60 years, from that unity, were two children, Elaine Harrell Turner, and Ivan Harrell.


He was a teacher at Brighton Elementary, served as Administrator at Norfolk State University, and Elizabeth City State and retired as Administrator of Chesapeake Public Schools.


Alphonzo was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Eureka Club, Inc. and the New Chesapeake Men for Progress and President of the Colonial Point Civic League.


He was a member of Zion Baptist Church for 50 years, where he became a Senior Choir member and Men’s Choir Director. He served as a member of Men of Zion, and the Personnel Committee, he also worked on the Pastor’s Search Committee, Board of Christian Education and as a repairman among other services. He was ordinated as a Deacon on April 22, 1990. He was celebrated and honored at Zion Baptist Church on November 19, 2017, as Deacon Emeritus.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Harrell, son Ivan Harrell, brothers, Hilton, Robert, Maurice, L. Bradford, Gerald, and W. Haywood Harrell. Sisters, Nancy Harrell, Pearl Fox, and Lydia Holley.


He leaves to cherish his memory, Elaine Harrell Turner (James III), daughter in laws, Chevelle Harrell, Marilyn Bowser, 5 grandchildren, grandsons, Daniel, Gabriel and James IV, granddaughters, Cierra Capehart and Ivana Harrell, and we can end with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
