Thomas Talbott Syers, 81 of Carrier Mills passed away at 10:35 a.m., Monday, October 24, 2022 at the Carrier Mills Nursing and Rehab Center with his family by his side.

Tom was born in Saline County on the family farm in the Pierson Hill area on November 17, 1940. He was son of the late Talbott and Helen (Hazley) Syers. Tom married the former Sandra Sue Moore in October 1963. They had just celebrated 59 years of marriage.

He attended Harrisburg High School graduating with the class of 1958. Tom also attended SIU for two years.

Tom worked for Sahara Coal Company for nearly 30 years until its closure. He then became a truck driver for Hollywood Trucking until his retirement. Tom was a 50 year member of Carrier Mills Blazing Star Lodge #458 and a 32nd degree Mason. He was a very avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Harrisburg Hunter’s Club.

Tom was a Baptist by faith and attended the First Baptist Church of Carrier Mills.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Sue, son, Michael (Tammy) Syers of Carrier Mills, daughter, Julie (Steve) Dunn of Harrisburg, granddaughters, Alyssa (Bryson) Olsen of AZ, Jessica (Matt) Lechner of OH, and Sarah (Al) Jenkins of TN, great-grandson, Cash Olsen, and sister, Dorothy Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Letha and Ward Fulkerson, brother-in-law, Noble Duncan, infant brother, Richard Syers, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Iva Moore, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Pat Durfee.

Private services will be held at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home on Friday, October 28, 2022 with Rev. Ryan Beck and Rev. Steve Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills.
