Leroy Cowan Obituary

Leroy Cowan age 92 years of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan died on Monday, October 24, 2022 at Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre.

He was born in Coronach, Sask. on January 18th, 1930, the third of five boys born to Jim and Irene Cowan. The family lived at Constance, Sask. until 1943 and, when Leroy was 13, the family moved to Shaunavon. Leroy and his brothers were all very active in sports, but Leroy's favorites were hockey and baseball. In the summer, he lived at the baseball diamond and in the winter, he lived at the outdoor rink, unless he was working on the farm. The five boys, his father and a few imports formed a dominant baseball team. In 1950, he met his true love, Reta Marion Sinden, and they were married October 14, 1950. Leroy and Reta lived in Shaunavon on Second Street East until moving out to the farm in 1976. Together, they raised three children, Janet, Gary and Dianne. Leroy was involved in the Masonic Lodge, minor hockey and the United Church. Roy was a Shaunavon Badger; yellow and black through & through and he fulfilled many roles with the Badger Club over the years, first as a player, and then as a coach, a manager and a volunteer, fulfilling any duties pertaining to the club that needed to be done. Later in life he was a #1 fan and enjoyed going to the rink to support any of the Shaunavon hockey teams that happened to be playing. Leroy spent many years at the Shaunavon rink, running the food booth, sharpening skates, running the zamboni and doing anything else that needed taking care of. Leroy was an avid hunter. He farmed for 70 years, and while farming, he poured his heart into raising purebred Charolais cattle, treating them like pets. Many calves spent time in the bathtub and the basement of the family home. He would be up at all hours to tend to his beloved animals and rarely took a holiday, as farming is a full time occupation. Leroy and Reta moved back into the Shaunavon Cowan family home on First Street East in 1985 and then into the Evergreen Villa in 2010. Leroy lived a very full and happy life, playing and watching about a million hockey and baseball games over the years. He had many friends and loved his Evergreen Villa community, where he was the chief Bingo caller and a coffee maker. He enjoyed hanging out in the front social room and looked forward to Debbie's great dinners there.

Leroy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Reta, his parents, Irene and Jim Cowan, brothers, Gerry and Floyd, as well as by numerous in-laws.

He is survived by his two younger brothers, Harold and Gord (Maureen). Also surviving him are his three children, Janet Musgrave, Gary (Laurie) Cowan, and Dianne (Trevor) Bitz, along with his grandchildren, Patrick (Beth) Musgrave, Amy (Ray Casson) and David Musgrave; Garret Cowan, Jenna Cowan (Corey) and Morgan (Ryan Atkinson); Dwight and Nicole Bitz and eight great grandchildren, Caitlin and Keira Musgrave; Colin, Connor and Cameron Casson; Lennon Cowan and Brixton and Benson Atkinson.

A celebration of life will be held at Centre Street United Church in Shaunavon on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 10:30 am with United Church Minister Connie Sykes officiating. Gerry Mitchell will present the eulogy. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon is in charge of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www. Binkleys.com.
